Mythology

Alex Ross, Mythology

The images in comic books are many things: kinetic, to be sure; colorful, more often than not; emotional, if the reader is lucky. But painter Alex Ross brings to his work an unparalleled sense of the real. His heroes — both super and mortal — have weight; they exist in space, and that space is affected by them in ways never before seen on the page. Award-winning designer Chip Kidd combed through more than 1,500 pieces of art — a chunk of which comes from DC’s landmark series ”Kingdom Come” — for Mythology (Pantheon, $35), which gives the newcomer an appreciation for the iconic aspects of characters like Superman, Batman, and the Joker, while the longtime fan can get a feel for the hand-cramping methods behind Ross’ beautiful madness.
