'Gangster Squad' trailer pulled over theater-shooting scene ‎

“Hmm, the page you’re looking for can’t be found.”

That’s what it says on the Apple trailers page if you go searching for the Gangster Squad. You’ll find similar disclaimers everywhere you look for it.

A scene of vicious gangland reprisal in the movie is suddenly more jarring and disturbing than originally intended following today’s mass shooting during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises in Colorado.

That’s why viewers aren’t likely to see that footage again in a trailer — if at all.

Warner Bros., which also released The Dark Knight Rises, immediately pulled the Gangster Squad ad from every possible venue, including prints in theaters, out of sensitivity for the victims of the tragic real-life shooting, says studio spokesperson Jessica Zacholl.

The promo had been showing in theaters since the debut of another of the studio’s movies, Steven Soderbergh’s stripper comedy Magic Mike, and although it was previously attached to prints of The Dark Knight Rises, it was not on every one. (Zacholl said the studio believes the trailer was not shown before that particular screening in Aurora, Colo.)

The movie, starring Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin as members of an elite vigilante police squad aiming to take down gang kingpin Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn), is set to debut Sept. 7. Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, 30 Minutes or Less) Gangster Squad is set in Los Angeles during the late 1940s, and was based on some true stories — with a fair amount of Hollywood make-believe thrown in. (The behind-the-screen shoot-out at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre would be one of the latter.)

It’s unclear whether the theater-shooting scene will remain in the finished picture when Gangster Squad opens. Warner Bros. has no information about that yet, and Fleischer did not immediately return a request for comment.
