That darkly-lit aesthetic became a signature of James Cameron’s franchise—and it’s immediately apparent that Terminator: Genisys director Alan Taylor wants to get back to that look. In fact, everything about the first full trailer evokes the texture and feel of the first film, from the 1984 setting to the slightly similar relationships, which are skewed by a ripple in the space-time continuum that left an orphaned Sarah Connor to be raised by the original Terminator. “The time John sent you to, it no longer exists,” Sarah (Emilia Clarke) tells Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney). “Everything’s changed.” Well… some things have changed. Throw in a few familiar catchphrases and a new liquid-metal T-1000 (Byung-Hun Lee) dressed in blue, and it’s as much an homage to Cameron’s films as it is a sequel. I’m fine with that. Genisys opens July 1.
