Box office preview: Just how big will Avengers: Age of Ultron be?

Over its four-week run, Furious 7 has dominated the box office and set a lot of records along the way. But when The Avengers: Age of Ultron arrives in theaters this weekend, expect it to finally dethrone Furious 7—and maybe even set a few records of its own.

Age of Ultron already brought in more than $200 million when it opened in 44 international territories last weekend, making it the No. 1 film in every place it debuted. Advance ticket sales will also help boost its box-office numbers this weekend: According to Fandango, presale tickets for Avengers: Age of Ultron are equal to the past Fandango presales for all previous Marvel Studios films combined.

As the only wide release, Age of Ultron shouldn’t face too much competition this weekend. Here are our top five estimates.

1. Avengers: Age of Ultron — $210 million

The first Avengers set a domestic box-office record, opening with $207.4 million and becoming the first film to surpass $200 million. Presale ticket numbers for Age of Ultron are much, much higher than they were for the first film, and even the most conservative estimates put Ultron around $200 million. That being said, even though Age of Ultron has added names like James Spader and Elizabeth Olsen to an already star-studded cast, the reviews haven’t been as good. The Avengers earned a 92 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but Age of Ultron has only scored a 73 percent. The combination of high presale numbers and lackluster reviews might average out to a total that’s only slightly higher than the first movie’s debut.

2. Furious 7 — $8.9 million

Furious 7 has followed the patterns of previous films in the series pretty closely, so as it enters its fifth weekend, it can expect to drop about 50 percent. Still, Furious 7 is doing just fine: With a worldwide total of $1.349 billion, it just surpassed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

3. Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 — $8.1 million

Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2’s Rotten Tomatoes rating has gone up a full four points, putting it at a whopping 6 percent. Still, Paul Blart is dropping at a faster rate than the first film, which means it could drop about 45 percent as it enters its third week.

4. The Age of Adaline — $7.1 million

Adaline opened with $13.2 million, right on par with The Longest Ride, another recent romance. The Nicholas Sparks adaptation dropped about 46 percent during its second week, and if Adaline does the same, it should earn about $7.1 million.

5. Home — $5 million

As one of the only kid-friendly movies in theaters right now, Home has had a long, healthy run over the past five weeks. It’s been dropping at an average rate of 37 percent each week, and if it keeps up that pattern, it could see $5 million this weekend.
