“Hell, no!” famously sang character Sofia in the last Broadway production of The Color Purple, but the breaking news that Orange is the New Black star Danielle Brooks is joining John Doyle’s revival this fall is bound to be met with a resounding “Hell yes!”

Brooks — known to the hit Netflix series’ fans as Tasha “Taystee” Jefferson, the junk-food loving inmate and chief librarian of Litchfield Penitentiary — will play the role of the defiant Sofia (made famous in Alice Walker’s groundbreaking 1982 novel and Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film by an Oscar-nominated Oprah Winfrey) opposite the previously announced Cynthia Erivo as Celie and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson as the sexy Shug Avery.

Last seen in a 2005 Tony-nominated production, this revival of Purple (highly acclaimed and a big hit in the West End in 2013) is a stripped-down, no-frills version of the previous tuner, much in line with Doyle’s other revisals (Sweeney Todd, Company); Erivo will reprise her leading role from the London production.

The Color Purple will begin previews at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Broadway on Nov. 9.
