The studio is zeroing in on Mama director Andy Muschietti to lead the studio’s adaptation of Stephen King’s It, EW confirmed. The two sides are in negotiations. Fukunaga left the film in May, with financial concerns pegged as a primary reason. Filming was set to begin in three weeks upon the True Detective director’s departure, and has since been indefinitely delayed. He and writer Chase Palmer conceived the adaptation as two parts, but that plan went up in the air when the former left. Whether Will Poulter (We’re The Millers) will remain as the iconic Pennywise is unknown, but the studio was high on Poulter when the production was delayed in May. Muschietti’s 2013 horror project Mama, which starred Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and was executive produced by Guillermo Del Toro, was a surprise hit, earning over $145 million worldwide on a budget of $15 million.
