Simon Pegg on 'Star Trek Beyond' trailer: 'There's a lot more to the film'

The actor-writer asks fans to 'Hang in there, be patient'

When the fast and furious first trailer for Star Trek Beyond debuted earlier this week, some diehard fans of the sci-fi franchise seemed puzzled by the mix of high-octane action and winking humor. And Simon Pegg was one of them.

But according to Pegg, who plays Scotty and co-wrote Beyond, moviegoers can rest assured that there’s more to the sequel than what was teased in the 90-second video.

“It was very action-packed,” Pegg said of the trailer while speaking to Hey U Guys on Wednesday. “It was surprising. I find it to be kind of the marketing people saying, ‘Everybody come and see this film, it’s full of action and fun,’ when there’s a lot more to it than that.”

Pegg even admitted that he “didn’t love” the trailer, “because I know there’s a lot more to the film. There’s a lot more story and a lot more character stuff and a lot more what I would call Star Trek stuff.”

Still, he understands the realities of marketing big-budget movies. “They’ve got to bring a big audience in,” he said. “They’ve got to bang the drum. To the Star Trek fans, I’d say, ‘Hang in there, be patient.'”

Be patient indeed: Star Trek Beyond is scheduled to hit theaters July 22. Watch the interview with Pegg above.
