Sam Raimi in early talks to direct A Prophet remake written by Dennis Lehane

Sam Raimi might have his next movie lined up soon. The mind behind Ash vs Evil Dead is in early discussions to helm the American remake of A Prophet written by Dennis Lehane, EW has learned.

The original 2009 crime drama came from French director Jacques Audiard. The movie — about a young Algerian teenager getting involved with the mob while in prison — received accolades including the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2009, nine César Awards on 13 nominations, an Oscar nod for Best Foreign Language Film, and a 97 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The project would be at Sony, the studio behind all three of Raimi’s Spider-Man films. Raimi most recently worked on the Showtime series Ash vs Evil Dead as an executive producer, and his last film was Oz the Great and Powerful in 2013.

Lehane, a best-selling thriller author, has had four of his works adapted to film; three were adapted by other writers (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone, Shutter Island), while Lehane assumed screenwriting duties for The Drop. He’s also penned three episodes of The Wire, and one for Boardwalk Empire.
