Nina Dobrev has set her sights on a heart-stopping new role. EW has confirmed that the Vampire Diaries alum is in talks to star in Sony’s reboot of Flatliners, the 1990 sci-fi thriller about a group of medical students who go out of their depth conducting near-death experiments.

Dobrev would play an overachiever named Marlo in the film, joining a cast that includes Ellen Page and Diego Luna.

Niels Arden Oplev, who directed the Swedish adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, is helming the new Flatliners, working from a script by Ben Ripley (Source Code).

Joel Schumacher directed the original movie, which starred Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, and Kevin Bacon. It received mixed reviews and grossed $61 million at the domestic box office.

Dobrev’s other screen credits include The Final Girls, Let’s Be Cops, and the upcoming xXx: The Return of Xander Cage.

Deadline first reported the talks.
