Benett/Dave Benett/Getty Images More than eight years since appearing on screen in Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker, Anthony Mackie is reuniting with the Oscar-winning filmmaker for her movie about the infamous Detroit riots, EW can confirm. The still untitled film is described as a crime drama set against the backdrop of the five-day riots in 1967. The story will address systematic racism in urban Detroit.” According to Deadline, Mackie will play a “returning Vietnam vet who figures prominently in the flashpoint drama.” The actor, who also portrays Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, joins a cast that includes John Boyega (Star Wars: Episode VIII), Will Poulter (We’re the Millers), Ben O’Toole (The Water Diviner), and Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction). Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty screenwriter Mark Boal penned the screenplay. The film is targeting a 2017 release date to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the riots.
