The veteran actress won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama for playing the always-quotable Violet Crawley on the final season of PBS’ Downton Abbey. Smith was not in attendance at the 68th annual Emmy Awards in Los Angeles Sunday. The evening’s host Jimmy Kimmel crashed the stage to commandeer Smith’s trophy. “No, no, no, no, no,” Kimmel said. “We’re not mailing this to her. Maggie, if you want this, it’ll be in the lost and found.” Earlier in the evening, Kimmel had joked about the actress, who previously has won three Emmys for playing the snarky and witty Dowager Countess and been nominated for six more, but has never attended the ceremony to accept her award. In 2013, Smith won the supporting actress in a drama series award and in 2011, she won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie. Over the course of the period drama’s six seasons, Smith was praised for delivering her character’s quips with perfect timing. Smith faced some fierce competition from her fellow nominees in the category: Lena Headey (Game of Thrones), Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Maura Tierney (The Affair), and Constance Zimmer (UnREAL). via GIPHY See the full winners’ list here.
