EW's editorial guidelines Updated on May 24, 2021 01:45AM EDT The Billboard Music Awards returned Sunday evening for its 2021 edition, just seven months after the last (pandemic-delayed) ceremony. The Weeknd, who led the pack of nominees as a finalist in 16 categories, swept the ceremony, picking up 10 trophies, including the biggest win of the night, for Top Artist. He also took home awards for Top 100 Artist and Top Hot 100 Song for his inescapable smash "Blinding Lights." BTS also dominated the awards, winning every category they were nominated for, including Top Duo/Group, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Social Artist, and Top Selling Song, for their hit "Dynamite." The group performed their latest single, "Butter," which they dropped Friday, during the ceremony. Bad Bunny also snagged four awards — Top Latin Artist, Top Latin Male Artist, Top Latin Album, and Top Latin Song — and the late rapper Pop Smoke, who received record-breaking posthumous recognition as a finalist in 10 categories, won five, including Top Billboard 200 Album for Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon. His mother, Audrey Jackson, accepted the award on his behalf, telling the audience, "Thank you for honoring my young warrior." Pink accepted the Icon Award, presented by her childhood crush Jon Bon Jovi, after performing a string of her best-known songs, including "Just Like a Pill," "Get the Party Started," and "So What." She also delivered a moving aerial performance of her new single, "Cover Me in Sunshine," with her daughter, Willow. Trae Tha Truth was honored with the Change Maker Award, and Drake received the Artist of the Decade Award. "I'm really self-conscious about my music," the latter admitted when he accepted the award, his 3-year-old son, Adonis, joining him on the stage. He added, "I've spent an incalculable amount of hours trying to analyze all the things I did wrong, but tonight for once I'm sure as hell we did something right." To commemorate the 20th anniversary of her debut studio album, Songs in A Minor, which was released in June 2001, Alicia Keys gave a special performance, serving up a medley of some of her biggest hits, including "Fallin.'" In a video introduction, Michelle Obama praised her, saying, "This young singer was taking us to church and to the symphony and to a candlelit dinner and couples therapy and everywhere else, all in a little more than three minutes. I knew right there that wouldn't be the last we hear from Alicia Keys." Hosted by Nick Jonas, the BBMAs were broadcast live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and aired on NBC. A number of awards were given out earlier Sunday on Billboard Music Awards Instagram Live in a ceremony hosted by Matthew Hoffman. The Weeknd racked up seven trophies there, including for Top Male Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist, Top R&B Artist, and Top Radio Song. Meanwhile, Pop Smoke won four awards, including Top New Artist, Top Rap Artist, and Top Rap Album. Country star Morgan Wallen, a finalist in six categories due to airplay, won Top Country Album, Top Country Artist, and Top Country Male Artist, but his use of a racial slur earlier this year cost him an appearance at the show. First-time finalist Gabby Barrett netted two wins, for Top Country Song and Top Collaboration, a category voted on by fans. The awards celebrate artists who achieved considerable success on the Billboard charts from March 21, 2020, through April 3, 2021. BMA finalists and winners "are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay, and social engagement, tracked by Billboard and its data partners, including MRC Data," the publication said in a news release.
