Britney Spears biopic movie based on Woman in Me memoir in the works with Wicked director

Jon M. Chu will direct the "Woman in Me" adaptation about Spears' life, with "La La Land" producer Marc Webb also on board.

This is (about to be) a big-screen story about a girl named Britney.

Ahead of the highly anticipated release of his Wicked movie later this year, Universal Pictures has announced that Jon M. Chu will develop and direct a Britney Spears biopic movie based on the pop superstar's 2023 memoir The Woman in Me.

Chu will work on the film with La La Land producer Marc Platt, who also collaborated with him on Wicked and other TV shows and stage productions that have, across all projects, earned multiple honors from the Oscars, Emmys, and Tonys.

Released in late 2023 to positive reviews and stellar sales, The Woman in Me chronicles Spears' rise to fame as the defining pop star of her generation, from her early days as a child growing up in Louisiana to her big break as one of the stars of The Mickey Mouse Club. The book also charts her ascension to her pop culture throne in music and her subsequent issues with her family and the controversial 13-year conservatorship that caused a rift between the singer, her sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, mother Lynne Spears, and father Jamie Spears.

The book further documented difficulties Spears reportedly had with ex-boyfriend and fellow recording artist Justin Timberlake — namely an abortion that Spears said he urged her to have.

“I wanna apologize for some of the things I wrote about in my book. If I offended any of the people I genuinely care about I am deeply sorry,” Spears later wrote on social media, after Timberlake received public blowback over the book's contents.

While she's a worldwide legend for her work as a performer, Spears revealed in January that she will "never return" to the music industry, but still intends to write songs for other artists.

A release date, plot details, and casting information have yet to be announced.
