Emma Roberts says 'gimme more' to those Britney Spears casting rumors

The "American Horror Story" star says playing Spears on the big screen is her "dream."

When it comes to those Britney Spears casting rumors, Emma Roberts says gimme, gimme (more).

Shortly after Universal Pictures announced it was developing a biopic based on Spears' memoir, The Woman in Me, the pop star's former longtime assistant, Felicia Culotta, told TMZ that she thought Roberts would be the perfect actress to play Spears. Though no official casting has been announced, the American Horror Story: Delicate star says she is (theoretically) 100 percent on board.

"I mean, it’s my true dream to play Britney Spears," Roberts told Cosmopolitan in an interview published Aug. 29. "It’s a rumor, but I hope maybe it’ll come true. I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to In the Zone and said, “I cannot leave this room until I memorize every word.”

The 33-year-old actress, who had her first child with ex-boyfriend Garrett Hedlund in late 2020, says she serenades her son with Britney tunes "all the time" in the bath. "That’s some millennial parenting," she told Cosmopolitan. (Earlier this summer, Roberts announced her engagement to actor Cody John.)

Released in late 2023,The Woman in Me chronicles Spears' rise to fame, first as one of the stars of The Mickey Mouse Club and later as the queen of the teen pop boom in the late '90s and early aughts. The book also explores the singer's issues with her family and the controversial 13-year conservatorship that caused a rift between Britney, her sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, mother Lynne Spears, and father Jamie Spears.

The audiobook version of The Woman in Me made its own headlines, thanks to its memorable narration from Oscar-nominated actress Michelle Williams.

Announced on Aug. 1, the biopic adaptation of Spears' memoir will be directed by Jon M. Chu, who will work with La La Land producer Marc Platt. No release date has been set.
