Between this look and the one she wore to the Critic's Choice Awards, Hathaway seems to be opting for simplicity over edge, and her Chanel Fine Jewelry, natural makeup, and soft pixie hairstyle make her look effortlessly elegant. B+ 03 of 20 Katharine McPhee in Theyskens' Theory Christopher Polk/NBC/Getty Images The Smash star went for all-out sexy in this gown, which was styled with a jacket when it hit the runway at the New York Fashion Week Spring 2013 collections. I'm iffy on this one. McPhee certainly has the body for the daring V-neck and high slit, but there's an art to showing skin on the red carpet and she went a little overboard. C+ 04 of 20 Taylor Swift in Donna Karan Atelier Christopher Polk/NBC/Getty Images The newly single Swift stunned in an egg plant gown with coy mesh cut-outs. She may have lost the award for Best Original Song to Adele, but when it came to this look, she landed in the winner's circle. I love it,'' the actress told reporters of her Tom Ford frock. The Game Change actress looked every bit a star from the front in this stunning black and white dress, but when she turned around it was a different story. My biggest problem with the look it that it's been done before... back in the 1980s. C 07 of 20 Sienna Miller in Erdem Jason Merritt/Getty Images Miller's done better, but her feminine pick made a little more sense once she explained it to reporters on the red carpet: ''I feel like it's '60s-ish so it's fitting with a character like [I played in] The Girl, but it's modern. I mean it's definitely out there but I love it,'' she said, adding that she also really wanted to wear something British which is why she chose the young designer from her home country. Although the actress showed a flash of cleavage in this key-hole gown, it's the gold embellishments that really caught my eye. I only wish she had put her hair up so that we could see more of the gown's intricate details and her Jennifer Meyer earrings. A- 09 of 20 Helena Bonham Carter in Dolce & Gabbana Jason Merritt/Getty Images Carter always brings quirk to the carpet, and I've got to give it to her for always staying true to her personal style. That said, Morticia Addams called and she wants her cocktail dress back. And would it have been too much for the actress to smooth out her hair for one night? D 10 of 20 Tina Fey in (custom) L'Wren Scott and Amy Poehler in Stella McCartney Jason Merritt/Getty Images When it comes to comedy, Poehler can hang with the big boys, but when it comes to fashion she should leave the suits to the guys. The bare skin under a blazer part was sexy, but the cropped pants looked too casual. Tina Fey had me going until her dress stopped short at the ankle, exposing her towering Salvatore Ferragamo heels. The dresses the hosts chose to wear for the actual show were gorgeous, but their red carpet looks were underwhelming. C 11 of 20 Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta Jason Merritt/Getty Images The New Girl actress went with her usual retro look with a sweetheart neckline, a string of Kwiat pearls and movie-themed nail art. I liked the dress, but I wasn't in love with her messy ponytail, and the pearls were a little too Wilma Flintstone. C+ 12 of 20 Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior Couture Jeff Vespa/WireImage The Best Actress winner is the new face of Dior, so her choice was a no-brainer .But while the coral-hued belted number was pretty, the Madonna cone bra effect that was happening on top was awkward.B- 13 of 20 Lucy Liu in Carolina Herrera Jason Merritt/Getty Images I shrieked out loud when Liu arrived wrapped in an over-sized shower curtain and Rapunzel braid. On the red carpet, she explained that she was going for "romantic with a modern twist," noting; ''I thought it was quite different than the Versace metallic number I did at the Emmys.'' Mission accomplished, but that¹s not necessarily a good thing. D 14 of 20 Claire Danes in Versace Jason Merritt/Getty Images Less than a month after giving birth to son Cyrus, the Homeland star flaunted her amazing body in a cherry colored silk gown that featured a thigh-high split, plunging neckline, and delicate beading. While I'm usually on board with the singer's shock-and-awe gown moments, this long-sleeve ivory embroidered lace gown dress is overkill. Though her makeup and hair were flawless. D 16 of 20 Adele in Burberry Steve Granitz/WireImage Like Zooey Deschanel, Adele gave me a case of deja vu last night. I'd love to see her in something besides the old-fashioned black dress and classic hair for once. Sure, she's a mom, but the Best Original Song winner is still only 24! C 17 of 20 Michelle Dockery in Alexandre Vauthier Jason Merritt/Getty Images From Downton Abbey to the red carpet, the actress channeled Lady Mary in a fall 2012 couture gown with a regal gold guipure bodice. I could've done without the burgundy heels, but the emerald jewelry was a perfect embellishment. A- 18 of 20 Emily Blunt in Michael Kors Jason Merritt/Getty Images I keep going back and forth on this '60s-inspired look. The spike-detailed brocade on this dress is exquisite and the cut outs make it interesting, but I would've liked the dress much better without them. In theory, the punch colored Lorraine Schwartz jewels were a nice pop of color, but they were dulled by her 14-carat dress. C 19 of 20 Julianne Hough in Monique Lhuillier Jason Merritt/Getty Images I love when edgy meets elegant, but in this case Hough's faux-hawk and punk makeup clashed with her amazingly detailed frock. And what was with the creepy accessories? The actress said her Daniela Villegas jewelry contained actual insect; the earrings were scarab beetle, while her ear cuff was created from a stick insect. B (dress), D (hair, makeup, and accessories) 20 of 20 Kerry Washington in Miu Miu Alberto Rodriguez/NBC/Getty Images The actress knocked it out of the park in her sleeveless, nude dress, which she paired with a Prada clutch and shoes and a sleek hairstyle. She should give Jennifer Lopez lessons on how to wear the sheer and nude trends without looking overexposed. A
