EW's editorial guidelines Published on February 2, 2024 04:47PM EST Laura Dern is ready to go back to Monterey. While doing press for her new show, Apple TV+'s Palm Royale, which she executive produced and stars on, Dern told EW that she is optimistic about a potential third season of Big Little Lies in response to reports that Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman are actively planning season 3 of the HBO series. "I can tell you that all of us who are involved in it would never imagine a better time," Dern says. "We love each other so much and would have the time of our life being back together, and we love our characters so much." "I truly know what you know," she continued. "But I know that it is something that they are working diligently at dreaming up, and I sure hope it comes to fruition." Laura Dern on 'Big Little Lies'. Hilary Bronwyn Gayle/courtesy of HBO Last month, both Witherspoon and Kidman revealed that they were hard at work on a potential third season. At the Golden Globes, Witherspoon teased to Variety, "We are working on it. Nic and I have been working on it a lot." Shortly after, Kidman broached the subject with Vogue Australia, saying that her 15-year-old daughter has demanded more episodes. "And she was like, ‘No. There’s no more discussion. The third series has to happen… I’m sick of the talk. Sick of circling it. Just get it done,'” the Oscar winner said. “You need a teenager to go, ‘Enough. Just do it.’” Kidman then also corroborated Witherspoon's comments on the ongoing process. "We are very close," she said. "We live in the same city five minutes from each other and we spend enormous amounts of our off-work time together. We’re always like, ‘We could do this, and we could do that!’ And now, the train has left the station.” Previously, all hopes of a third season seemed dashed in the wake of the death of the show's visionary director Jean-Marc Vallée in Dec. 2021. But it seems those hopes have been renewed. HBO has consistently declined to comment on a potential third season.
