When news broke a few weeks ago that the Divergent film franchise was, um, diverging from its planned theatrical release and heading to TV screens instead, fans weren’t the only ones taken by surprise. Stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort have both said that they’re unsure whether they’ll be returning for the planned TV movie, and now, Miles Teller is saying the same.

Speaking to Variety at the premiere of his new movie War Dogs, Teller revealed that he has no idea whether he’ll reprise his role as the self-serving Peter in the upcoming TV movie — and he himself was caught by surprise when he learned that the Divergent finale wouldn’t be hitting theaters.

“I’ve talked to nobody,” Teller said. “I found out 20 minutes before Variety printed it.”

Originally, Lionsgate had planned to release four films based on Veronica Roth’s best-selling young-adult trilogy, splitting the final novel, Allegiant, into two movies. But after the third movie debuted in March to tepid reviews and disappointing box office receipts, it was revealed that the studio planned to skip releasing the final installment in theaters. Instead, the plan is to debut it as a TV movie, with the hopes of launching a spinoff TV series with new characters and actors.

“When we all signed on for the first one we had every intention of finishing it theatrically,” Teller told Variety. “We signed on for x amount of movies and you take that all into consideration. We wanted to see that storyline finish. You know, it’s moving into a different format. So who knows?”

Teller appeared in all three of the original Divergent movies as Peter, a member of Dauntless and the part-time enemy, part-time ally of Tris Prior (Woodley). The final Divergent movie, Ascendant, was originally supposed to hit theaters on June 9, 2017, with Age of Adaline director Lee Toland Krieger behind the camera.
