Harry Potter fans have seen Newt Scamander’s fantastic beasts and learned where to find them. Now, let’s see how they’re made.

A VFX breakdown video from Rodeo Visual Effects Company shows how the team helped create the CG creatures, the world of 1970s New York City, and MACUSA headquarters for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Spotted in the footage are the Murtlap that attacked Jacob (Dan Fogler), the wide-eyed Mooncalves, the apparating Diricrawls, the ferocious Nundu, and the watery Grindylows.

According to the caption, Rodeo VFX “delivered 126 visual effects shots” for Fantastic Beasts.

David Yates directed the film based on a screenplay from J.K. Rowling, and introduced the wizarding world to Newt (Eddie Redmayne), Tina (Katherine Waterston), Queenie (Allison Sudol), and Jacob. Fantastic Beasts, the first of a new series of films, is nominated for two Oscars: Costume Design and Production Design.
