Pharrell Williams producing movie musical inspired by his childhood

After earning an Oscar nomination for producing Hidden Figures, Pharrell Williams has lined up his next project: a musical based on his own childhood.

EW has confirmed that Fox is developing the film, a movie musical titled Atlantis. Williams is set to produce alongside Gil Netter and Mimi Valdes.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the news, Atlantis is being described as a “Romeo and Juliet style story (with a music element) inspired by Williams’ childhood in Virginia Beach.”

Broadway alum Michael Mayer, who won a Tony Award for Spring Awakening, is attached to direct Atlantis. Mayer also directed the Broadway stage adaptation of American Idiot, as well as the 2006 film Flicka. Toy Story 4 writer Martin Hynes will write the screenplay.

A 10-time Grammy winner, Williams is best known for his music career, but he’s also been involved in some high-profile film projects. He earned his first Oscar nomination in 2014 for writing the song “Happy” for Despicable Me 2, and he previously teamed up with Fox to produce and write the music for Hidden Figures. In all, Hidden Figures earned three Oscar nominations, including best picture, and it raked in more than $220 million at the global box office.
