Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigator played by Vera Farmiga in The Conjuring films, has died at 92

Paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren has died at age 92. Warren was played by Vera Farmiga in 2013’s horror film The Conjuring and its 2016 sequel, The Conjuring 2. Farmiga will portray Warren again in this summer’s Annabelle Comes Home.

Warren claimed to have clairvoyant powers and, together with her husband Ed, investigated thousands of alleged hauntings, traveling as far as the U.K. and Japan. In 1976, she and her late husband, Ed, investigated the so-called Amityville Horror, a haunting in Long Island that inspired a 1979 film and a slew of big-screen spin-offs. ”It was a very bad place,” Warren told EW in 2013, recalling the Amityville house. ”I remember when I was there, and Ed said he was pushed to the floor as if a heavy blanket was pushed over him.”

The Warrens were also brought in to investigate a 1986 case that led to the 2009 film The Haunting in Connecticut. Over time, the Warrens became among the best known of supernatural investigators while also attracting a legion of critics who disputed the allegedly scientific nature of their investigations.

Speaking with EW on the set of Annabelle Comes Home last October, Farmiga talked about how much she enjoyed playing Warren and depicting her relationship with Ed, who is played in the Conjuring universe films by Patrick Wilson.

“I do love playing this character, I really do,” she said. “This is a woman who is living her potential. Especially in this climate, to be honest with you, in this climate of dissension and rancor and division, I love exhibiting their unity, and their closeness, and their togetherness. It’s something special for me.”

Warren’s passing was announced on Facebook by her son-in-law, Tony Spera.

“It is with deep sadness that I must announce that Lorraine Warren has passed away,” Spera wrote, Friday morning. “She died peacefully in her sleep at home last night. The family requests that you respect their privacy at this time. Lorraine touched many lives and was loved by so many. She was a remarkable, loving, compassionate and giving soul. To quote Will Rogers, she never met a person she didn’t like. She was an avid animal lover and contributed to many animal charities and rescues. She was wonderful and giving to her entire family. May God Bless her.”

Farmiga has paid tribute to Warren on Twitter.

“My dear friend Lorraine Warren has passed,” wrote the actress. “From a deep feeling of sorrow, a deep feeling of gratitude emerges. I was so blessed to have known her and am honored to portray her. She lived her life in grace and cheerfulness…. Love you Lorraine. You’re waltzing with Ed now.”
