Bella Thorne, Sam Smith pay tribute to rapper Lil Peep after his death at 21

Members of the music community, including Sam Smith and Charli XCX, spoke out in mourning Thursday as news of Lil Peep's death came to light. The promising young rapper, who became known for his blend of hip-hop and emo music, died at the age of 21, as confirmed by Sarah Stennett of First Access Entertainment, a company that worked with Lil Peep.

"I am shocked and heartbroken," Stennett said in a statement published on Facebook. "I do not believe Peep wanted to die, this is so tragic. He had big goals and dreams for the future which he had shared with me, his team, his family and his friends. He was highly intelligent, hugely creative, massively charismatic, gentle and charming. He had huge ambition and his career was flourishing. I have spoken to his mother and she asked me to convey that she is very, very proud of him and everything he was able to achieve in his short life. She is truly grateful to the fans and the people who have supported and loved him."

Details of his death are still emerging.

Bella Thorne, who was once romantically linked to Lil Peep, posted on Twitter, "Peep you deserved more out of life. Live didn't do your greatness justice. She also posted two emotional videos to her Instagram stories. "I just wanted to say anybody out there who is a Lil Peep fan, you guys know how talented he was, you guys know how great he was," she said. "Well he was even more f—— great as a person."

"Seeing the news of Lil Peep is so desperately sad," Smith tweeted. Charli XCX called his passing "a tragedy" and praised Peep's talent. "I remember hearing him for the first time and being so enthralled," she wrote. "Love to all his family, friends and fans. We have lost something special. R.I.P."

In his last video posted to Instagram before his death, Peep, born Gustav Åhr, said he took "six Xanax" but followed up with, "I'm good. I'm not sick." He also posted in a separate post, "When I die you'll love me."

During an interview with Pitchfork that was published in January, Peep was asked if he was suicidal, in reference to his emotional lyrics on "OMFG," off his Hellboy album.

"Yeah, it is serious," he said at the time. "I suffer from depression and some days I wake up and I'm like, 'F—, I wish I didn't wake up.' That was part of why I moved to California, trying to get away from the place that was doing that to me, and the people I was around. I realized it was just myself — it's a chemical imbalance in my brain. Some days I'll be very down and out, but you won't be able to tell, really, because I don't express that side of myself on social media. That's the side of myself that I express through music. That's my channel for letting all that s— out."

Music producer Marshemello tweeted after the news of his death: "Peep was the nicest person. hanging out with him, talking to him about music, the song ideas we were going to do together and touring was so amazing. Everyone will miss you man."
