SZA gives injury update: 'My voice is not permanently damaged'

SZA will be back to sing another day.

The Grammy-nominated star tweeted out a medical update Sunday afternoon, informing fans that her voice is recovering “slowly but surely.”

“Thank u to the incredible team of Doctors and vocal technicians that have taken time to see me over the last few weeks in every city,” she wrote. “I’m blessed to say my voice is not permanently damaged and i’ve been working daily to get back.”

The news comes weeks after SZA took a break for an indeterminate length of time from the TDE Championship Tour and tweeted, “My voice is permanently injured.” Those remarks have since been deleted, but Vulture captured them here.

That tweet came after an announcement from producer Top Dawg that he would be taking her off the tour. “I got some bad news,” he wrote on Instagram. “I have to take SZA off for a few days on the tour. Her vocal chords are swollen and she have to rest her voice to prevent any permanent damage…We been monitoring her close and this is the reason she missed the Arizona and New Mexico dates.”

SZA also re-shared the statement from Top Dawg, adding a caption that read, “For anyone who hasn’t seen this. I’ve been touring for 11 months. This didn’t happen overnight . Ive been troubleshooting for a while now and Usually steroids and pushing through help. They don’t this time. I’m not sick my voice just won’t f–king work? …. If I don’t pause now I’ll be forced to pause permanently. I’m genuinely sorry for every face, voice, and energy field I won’t be touching! I’m literally taking as many steroids as I can to speed this up!! Its a waiting game and super weird to be blamed for stuff outta my control but I get it ! again .. I’m sorry..I’ll be right back . Pray for me or don’t . Preciate u either way.”

That Instagram post has also since been deleted, and now it seems SZA’s prognosis is better than she initially feared.

SZA was nominated for five Grammy Awards this past February, including Best New Artist, and she recently made a cameo in Childish Gambino’s “This is America” music video.

On Sunday, she thanked fans for their support, writing, “Firstly I wanna thank everyone for sending me loving kindness and extending your energy my direction. Thank u for your prayers, I feel them and deeply appreciate you. I love you.”

She concluded by revealing that she will be back on stage this evening at the Firefly Music Festival in Delaware. “Today we give it a go and hit the stage at firefly,” she wrote. “See you at 8.”
