James Corden calls Faye Dunaway, Warren Beatty the 'Sean Spicer of the Oscars'

James Corden is still trying to make sense of Sunday’s Oscars spectacle.

“There were a lot of surprising winners and a lot of surprising losers, and a couple that were both,” the television host said, referencing Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway’s botched Best Picture presentation, on Monday’s episode of The Late Late Show. “When this happened, I bet Hillary Clinton was like, ‘Yeah, welcome to my world.'”

Though Corden acknowledged the Hollywood icons weren’t at fault for opening the incorrect envelope (PricewaterhouseCoopers confirmed Monday Beatty was mistakenly given a duplicate card for Best Actress instead of Best Picture), he did find their predicament a telling metaphor for the dealings of President Donald Trump. “They were sent out there with the wrong information and were expected to make it work. Basically, they were the Sean Spicer of the Oscars,” he said, comparing the duo to the White House press secretary.

Corden wasn’t the only one surprised by the La La Land–Moonlight mix-up. After showing a candid photo of the stunned, star-studded crowd at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre (taken as the Best Picture confusion played out on stage), Corden deconstructed the emotions clearly splashed across several famous faces.

“Look at Meryl Streep! That’s the face my dog makes when he hears a can opener. Michelle Williams and Busy Phillips look like they just found out Beyoncé is not performing at Coachella,” Corden continued. “The Rock is like, ‘This is even more surprising than the fact that I got to sit this close at the Oscars.’ Matt Damon looks like he’s been trash-talking about Mel Gibson all night and just realized he’s right behind him.”
