The Librarians spinoff The Next Chapter shelved indefinitely at the CW

The sequel series will no longer premiere this fall, as originally announced.

The CW's planned sequel to The Librarians has been shelved — for now.

Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that The Librarians: The Next Chapter — the follow-up to the successful TNT drama about a secret team tasked with guarding powerful, valuable, and sometimes supernatural artifacts — will not premiere on the CW on Oct. 24 after Superman & Lois, as was originally announced in May.

No new date has yet been set for the series.

The news comes two days after the CW announced that it will premiere a new unscripted series titled The Wranglers, which follows the staff of a dude ranch in Montana, on Oct. 24 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

The Librarians began in 2004 as a series of TV movies on TNT starring Noah Wyle. The network revived the property as a series in 2014, and it ran for four seasons.

Last year the CW ordered The Next Chapter, which it described as a "spinoff of the original series." The new series stars Callum McGowan as Vikram, a Librarian from the past who gets stuck in the present. According to a description from the network, when Vikram returns to his castle, "he inadvertently releases magic across the continent. He is given a new team to help him clean up the mess he made, forming a new team of Librarians." The series also stars Jessica Green, Olivia Morris, and Bluey Robinson.

In 2022, the CW was acquired by Nexstar Media Group, which began cutting costs at the network by canceling scripted series and replacing them with cheaper options including reality series, game shows, sports, and foreign productions.

The CW's current fall schedule features only two scripted series: Sullivan's Crossing, a Canadian series starring Morgan Kohan, and Joan, a British crime drama starring Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner.
