TV Black-ish wins big at NAACP Image Awards By Ariana Bacle Published on February 12, 2017 02:20PM EST Photo: Earl Gibson III/WireImage Saturday night was a good time to be a Black-ish star: The ABC family sitcom picked up six awards at this weekend’s NAACP Image Awards, which annually honor accomplishments of people of color in the entertainment industry. Black-ish nabbed the award for Outstanding Comedy Series, while stars Anthony Anderson (who also hosted the televised event), Tracee Ellis Ross, Laurence Fishburne, and Marsai Martin got acting trophies. Creator Kenya Barris received the Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series award for season 2 episode “Hope,” which centered on police brutality. “The episode was about having a conversation with your kids and about what’s going on in the world,” Barris told EW when the episode aired in 2016.“We really tried to make sure we gave ourselves enough balance to still get the point across but at the same time, give people an entry point where they felt like they could get into it and not be bummed out the whole time.” Other winners at the show included Taraji P. Henson, who picked up awards in both the television and film categories for Empire and Hidden Figures, along with Fences‘ Denzel Washington and Viola Davis, Moonlight breakout star Mahersala Ali, and Ava DuVernay’s 13th. In the music categories, Chance the Rapper was honored with Outstanding New Artist, while Beyoncé picked up five awards total, including Outstanding Female Artist. See the full list of winners below.
