Superstore's Halloween episode is about to get 'crazy-dark'

But at least Amy (America Ferrera) will be dressed as Selena Quintanilla-Pérez

As Halloween blows through Superstore this season (tornado pun intended), the typically upbeat comedy will make an unexpected turn.

“The Halloween episode is crazy-dark,” executive producer Justin Spitzer told EW. “It’s a very morbid episode. It really hits the blacker elements of Halloween.”

While Spitzer wouldn’t elaborate on what that would mean for Amy (America Ferrera), Jonah (Ben Feldman), and co., he did reveal what costumes some of them would be wearing: “Amy will be Selena. We thought Dina (Lauren Ash) looked awesome in her Halloween costume last year (see below) so we put her in it again. And Glenn (Mark McKinney) is in another costume that speaks of childlike innocence.”

“Our Halloween episode is always a great episode because we get to get out of our daily vest looks and into something more fun,” America Ferrera said. “And I am very, very excited about my costume this year on the show.”

Turns out, that Selena costume was Ferrera’s idea. “The last two years, Justin has asked me what I wanted to be because it hasn’t really played a role in the story line,” she said. “So I think most of us get to choose what we want to be unless it has something to do with the story line.”

Sorry, Dina.

Superstore returns for its third season on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
