ABC picks up Leslie Jones-hosted Supermarket Sweep game show reboot

Comedian on aisle 7!

The Leslie Jones-hosted Supermarket Sweep reboot has officially found a home at ABC, among the network’s slate of game shows. Karey Burke, the president of ABC Entertainment, made the announcement at TCA on Wednesday.

Jones was tapped to emcee and executive produce the series back in August, hours after the comedian’s exit from Saturday Night Live was revealed. The classic game show was coming back thanks to Fremantle productions, but no network or streaming service was attached at the time.

The fast-paced series follows three teams of two as they battle to see who can fill their basket with the most valuable goods in order to win cash prizes. The original format aired on ABC from 1965 to 1967, before getting revived on Lifetime from 1990 to 1995, and on PAX from 1999 to 2003. Production on the 10-episode order will begin this spring, with an airdate to be revealed later.

“I’ve always dreamed of being on Supermarket Sweep,” Jones said in a statement. “Seriously, I tried out for the show years ago; and after getting turned away, I knew I’d have to take matters into my own hands. Being able to bring the iconic game show back to life on ABC is my ultimate redemption story!”

Supermarket Sweep is the perfect addition to ABC’s strong lineup of classic game show revivals, and we struck gold having Leslie Jones as the host and executive producer,” said Burke. “The original version was one of my all-time favorites. I can’t wait for it to be reintroduced with Leslie’s fresh and unique take on the classic supermarket race, which will undoubtedly appeal to an entirely new generation of viewers.”

Jones was a cast member on SNL from 2014 to 2019, and since her departure, she has lined up numerous projects. Her Netflix comedy special, Leslie Jones: Time Machine, debuts Jan. 14 and she can be seen in Eddie Murphy’s Coming to America 2, which is set for a Christmas release date.

Supermarket Sweep is just the latest classic game show to get revamped at ABC. The network renewed a slew of similar programs in November, including Match Game, Press Your Luck, Card Sharks, To Tell the Truth, and The $100,000 Pyramid, in what’s been called ABC’s “retro renaissance.”
