Doohlabs and Craneworks have joined forces with Aller Media, a Pan-Nordic media company, to promote retail media and help medium-sized and smaller chains to easily experiment with audience monetization. IAB published a comprehensive DOOH + In-store retail media playbook. It’s a very good introduction on topic and covers various fields in detail. A strong recommendation for this one! A small critique for the retail media approach in this playbook is in order, though. One of key elements of retail media is first party data. It is the superpower that enables reaching just the right target groups and in accumulating insight on what works and what not. This playbook only touches the subject on 1st party data. There may be several reasons for this. In pure DOOH-businesses, the use of data is typically far rare, and the used data is on very general level. The technology for DOOH usually also is not built to handle 1st party data at all and to target on screen level. The core capability of an in-store retail platform on the other hand, is to take the data in securely, help in building audiences & media products from it and distribute the ads for the right audience at the right time automatically - on a single screen level.
