Today, we wish our RDI Director, Soilikki Kotanen, the best of luck as she defends her PhD dissertation 🎓, inspired by her day-to-day work at Kiilto. Her research focuses on exploring alternative components for the production of safer industrial adhesives, specifically reactive and hot-melt adhesives, with a focus on non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU). “Although combining work and further studies has been tough at times, support from colleagues helped me keep going. We put our heads together to consider scientific theories, but also managed to proceed with good humour and always celebrated any small successes that came along the way. My research was very practical, which was a motivating factor even during the most challenging times,” says Kotanen. Her findings are expected to significantly contribute to safer industrial adhesive manufacturing processes 🏭, reducing the need for harmful substances like isocyanates, which are known to pose health risks such as asthma and cancer. Since 2005, the Foundation has successfully completed 34 #marine environment projects, reducing phosphorus (which fuels toxic algal blooms) in the Gulf of #Finland by 75%. Kiilto and Satamaito have worked together towards optimized wash processes since 2015, back when Satamaito still operated from its previous premises. During Satamaito's move to Ulvila and the building phase of the new dairy, Kiilto provided expertise in chemical selection, process development, and monitoring. 🥛✨ United by clear environmental goals, Kiilto and Satamaito are working towards more sustainable dairy practices. This can be achieved by for example, by saving water and energy and minimizing chemical usage. 💦 In the future, the measuring, monitoring and optimizing is developed even further. 🌊 How many of these #BalticSea key species have you spotted in the wild? Key species play a vital role in the health and balance of ecosystems. While every species contributes to #biodiversity, key species have an outsized impact on their environment. The Dust-to-Value (D2V) project, led by Åbo Akademi University within Mirka's SHAPE Ecosystem, has reached an exciting new milestone: our collaboration has yielded a new, sustainable method for extracting valuable components from #biomass.🌱   This breakthrough, achieved within the research consortium launched in September 2023, showcases Boreal Bioproducts' innovative process that utilizes pressurized hot water 💧 to extract bio-based chemical ingredients from wood-based sides streams like #sawdust 🌲 and bark. By reintegrating these #materials into the production cycle ♻️, the process significantly advances the circular and bio-based economy.   As a business partner in this project and an integral part of the research consortium, we at Kiilto see this development as a crucial step toward our goal of creating fossil-free #adhesives 🧪 and #buildingmaterials 🏗️through our SUPER Healthy Buildings Ecosystem.   We also recognize the potential of this innovation to support broader initiatives, such as Mirka's SHAPE Ecosystem, which aims to decarbonize and circularise the (re)manufacturing industry.   Read more about this project, which will run until 2026 and includes several Finnish universities and business partners, via the links in the comments. ⬇️

Our amazing Danish team participated in the DHL Stafetten yesterday and what an experience it was! 🌟 In addition to getting sweat on our foreheads and healthy red cheeks, we had fun, enjoyed ourselves and strengthened the team spirit 💪🎉 It was an evening filled with laughter, fellowship and times that were both better (a time of 20 minutes and 40 seconds among other things 💪) and worse than last year, but we all got through – and that's what counts! 💯 Thanks to all the runners and to everyone who cheered and helped make the evening a party! We’re proud to announce that Make a BIM, a Finnish #PropTech startup, has secured pre-seed funding to scale their operations and advance the digitalisation of aging building stock, starting with Europe! 🌍 Founded by Leo Salomaa, Ville-Matti Tanninen, and Jami Valorinta in 2023, Make a BIM is leveraging #AI to convert 2D drawings into Building Information Models (#BIM) in minutes. This tech reduces repetitive, manual labour by experts and ensures compliance with new regulations, such as the Energy Performance of Building Directive (#EPBD) set to take effect by 2026. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭? 🔹 97% of EU buildings need upgrades to meet decarbonisation goals by 2050. 🔹 85% were built before 2000, with 75% showing poor energy performance. 🔹 BIM is crucial for planning energy-efficient renovations. Make a BIM has already created models for over 100 buildings, including projects for Helsingin kaupungin asunnot Oy (Heka) / Helsinki City Housing Company. They’ve also attracted interest from building owners and service providers worldwide, from the U.S. to Asia. As the lead investor at Kiilto Ventures, with support from Innovestor and FiBAN Angels like Kim Väisänen, Esa Kinnunen, and Teemu Jokinen, we’re excited to see what comes next.
