The UK Mineral Products Association (MPA) Asphalt has published verified environmental product declarations (EPDs) for four generic asphalt product types used in road construction. The new reference EPDs are the first to be verified by MPA Asphalt, and they are a solid step forward in establishing industry benchmarks for environmental assessment. Using One Click LCA’s life-cycle assessment (LCA) tool, MPA was able to calculate the environmental performance of asphalt products based on generic industry data, using the tool’s automated data import feature.  How reference EPDs benefit the UK construction industry: ✅ Standardized benchmarking: These EPDs serve as critical reference points, enabling consistent and reliable comparisons across the asphalt industry. They provide a standardized baseline against which individual producers can measure their environmental performance. ✅ Industry-wide representation: Derived from MPA member and generic industry data, these reference EPDs are representative of the majority of UK producers and production volumes, ensuring their relevance and applicability across the sector. ✅ Cost-effective compliance: By providing industry-standard EPDs, MPA Asphalt reduces the financial burden on individual companies to generate product-specific EPDs, while still enabling accurate environmental reporting. ✅ Transparency: The availability of verified reference EPDs increases transparency in environmental reporting across the asphalt industry. The EPDs will allow companies to compare the products and enable them to report reductions and improvements in the environmental impact. ✅ Supporting decision-making: These benchmarks help in project scoping and evaluation, particularly for the 'cradle-to-gate' life cycle stages, enabling more informed decision-making in construction projects. Reference EPDs facilitate standardized, science-based sustainability assessments in the construction materials industry. They support the sector's progress towards net-zero carbon objectives and foster a more environmentally conscious approach to road construction. According to MPA Asphalt director Malcolm Simms: “MPA Asphalt members will soon have shared access to the online tool [One Click LCA], so that they can calculate their own EPDs to directly compare against these verified reference figures.
