Today, we had a full house, both on-site and online, for our Roschier Insights Seminar on the EU Data Economy.🌍 The focus was on the practical implications of the new rules on data sharing, AI, and cybersecurity at both the macro and micro levels, along with the challenges faced by European industries—a topic also highlighted by Mario Draghi in his recent report on competitiveness. The seminar kicked off with a keynote by Risto Siilasmaa, founder of F-Secure Corporation and WithSecure. Risto shared his thoughts on Europe's competitiveness as a hub for AI and tech development. He emphasized that technical expertise and agility are essential in drafting laws affecting new technologies to avoid stifling innovation. There’s a real risk that the penalties for non-compliance with the flood of new EU regulations could stifle tech development in the region. We also hosted a dynamic panel discussion, moderated by our partners Johanna Lilja and Arto Linnervuo, featuring Johannes Frände, General Counsel at KONE; Kai Kuohuva, Senior Legal Counsel at Fortum, and Karoliina Partanen, Director at AI Finland. The panel explored the threats and opportunities presented by the new AI, data, and cybersecurity laws, and shared best practices for implementing the new compliance requirements. As Kai pointed out, it's often unnecessary to reinvent the wheel. Instead, it can be more effective to build on existing frameworks. Using the analogy of the traditional wedding rhyme, "something old, something new, and something borrowed," this approach can help in prioritizing compliance actions. However, different business models, technologies, risk exposures, risk tolerances, and available resources all play a role in shaping digital governance strategies.💡 #datasecurity #cybersecurity #newAI

We have advised EcoDataCenter in the acquisition of parts of the old Kvarnsveden paper mill from the municipality of Borlänge. The site will allow for EcoDataCenter to establish a new mega campus spanning over 20 acres with a minimum power capacity of 240 MW, aligning with their broader strategy to promote the green transition by leveraging local renewable energy sources. The new site acquired in Borlänge, together with EcoDataCenter's previous establishment of data centers in nearby Falun, turns the region into powerhouse for European AI infrastructure. Roschier’s core advisory team comprised: Lisa Hybbinette, Carl Svensson, Emil Samuelsson, Anton Widlund and John Harryson.

We had the honor of partnering with the Finnish Association for Industrial Property Rights as one of the main supporters for the 36th Nordic NIR meeting. This event continued the long-standing tradition of convening intellectual property professionals from across the Nordic region. Nordic collaboration is particularly important for us, given our firm's deep roots in the Nordics with established offices in both Helsinki and Stockholm.🏙 The conference gathered almost 150 IP professionals in Helsinki and featured participants from every Nordic country. It included insightful discussions on current intellectual property law topics, such as a panel discussion on evidence in Nordic IP trials featuring our Partner Rainer Hilli, and a panel discussion on the Unified Patent Court (UPC) featuring our Partner Johanna Flythström. The entire conference was chaired by our Partner Mikael Segercrantz, who is also the President of the Finnish Association. The organization of the conference was coordinated by our Senior Associate Sara Väyrynen in her role as Treasurer of the Finnish Association, with the support of Senior Associates Johannes Strang and Anna Band, and Senior Brand Protection Specialist Camilla Udd, among other organizing committee members. We are grateful for the cooperation and remain dedicated to fostering collaboration within the IP community in the Nordics.✨ #NIR2024
