Meet Doctoral researcher Julia Vuorinen at VTT! 🎓✨ She is exploring the #water interactions in #cellulose-based #textiles. 🧵💧 👉 “One of the most desirable properties for #sportswear is comfort, which requires textile features that make the wearer feel dry and enable quick drying of the textile.” 🏃♂️ This is normally achieved with synthetic fibres such as #polyester and #polyamide. In comparison, cellulose-based textiles, such as #cotton, absorb moisture into the material itself. Wet cotton feels heavy and uncomfortably cold, and it also dries slowly. 🌧️ Julia is studying the mechanisms by which cellulose-based textiles and #nonwovens interact with water. 🔬 The aim is to create a cellulosic textile material that has improved moisture management properties similar to synthetic materials. To achieve this goal, Julia is using both physical and chemical modification of cellulose #fibres. 🧪 Her work will have a significant impact on finding biobased alternatives for synthetic materials in various applications, including #hygiene products and sports textiles. 🌿🏅 #Bioeconomy #Pulp FinnCERES

Our scientists at VTT have developed a skin spray, combining nanocellulose with antimicrobial compounds derived from wild berries! 🌱 This solution is designed to treat wounds and effectively eliminate hospital-acquired bacteria, such as MRSA, before surgery. "The fast-acting surgical spray and efficacious dressing are based on a manufacturing process we have developed, where the surface and pores of a nanocellulose film are impregnated with a berry extract so that the antimicrobial compounds do not get trapped inside the fibre network", says VTT's Panu Lahtinen. VTT's Andro Lindsay moved to Finland a couple of years ago through the 90 Day Finn program, and recently shared his story with Business Insider 🏡👇 🧡 Andro moved his family from Santiago, Chile, to Helsinki through the 90 Day Finn program in 2021. The program offers assistance on international moves and help getting set up professionally. 🧡 Andro and his daughters loved Finland so much that they stayed permanently after 90 days. Now, at VTT, he's in charge of business development for systemic complex challenges, focusing on carbon neutrality. 🧡 "My favorite things about Finnish culture are the balance between professional and personal life, technology and nature, and economic growth and sustainability."
