Tyfone Inks Strategic Partnership with Star One Credit Union to Boost Instant Payments
  • Digital banking solutions provider Tyfone has inked a strategic partnership with Star One Credit Union.
  • Tyfone will help Star One CU implement its instant payments solution.
  • Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, Tyfone made its Finovate debut in 2008.

Digital banking solutions provider Tyfone has forged a strategic partnership with Silicon Valley-based Star One Credit Union. Tyfone, a Finovate alum since 2008, will help the FedNow certified-credit union implement its new, instant payments solution.

“Today’s consumers and businesses not only want quick, simple, and instant ways to facilitate payments, but they expect a unified, consistent user experience,” Tyfone CEO Dr. Siva Narendra said. “Our partnership with Star One Credit Union allows us to build a solution that aligns with financial institutions’ unique needs and ensures greater accessibility. Our goal is to help scale this service and unlock the tremendous potential instant payments offers financial institutions and account holders.”

Tyfone’s technology helps financial institutions regardless of size connect directly to the FedNow Service for credit transfer send and receive message sets. The new solution developed by Star One Credit Union, in partnership with Tyfone, will integrate the core processing systems of FIs and leverage Tyfone’s open APIs to enable connectivity to payment originators and digital banking providers. The solution, combined with participation in the FedNow Service, will empower account holders to send and receive payments any time, any where, and have full and immediate access to transferred funds.

“Together with Tyfone, we are advancing instant payments adoption in the United States and helping to fulfill the end-to-end instant payment ecosystem,” Star One Credit Union VP of Remote Services Minai Gupta said. “We look forward to working with Tyfone’s team to create a solution for financial institutions of all sizes, regardless of what payment providers or digital banking platform they use.”

To date, more than 100 community financial institutions in the U.S. have adopted Tyfone’s platform and technology. For its part, Star One Credit Union is one of the largest FIs in Silicon Valley with more than 123,000 members. Launched more than 60 years ago, Star One CU today has assets of more than $10.2 billion. The financial institution offers membership to employees of some of Silicon Valley’s most notable companies such as Lockheed Martin and Juniper Networks.

Founded in 2004, Tyfone made its Finovate debut in 2008. This April, the company announced a “significant investment” from Demopolis Equity Partners and a merger with digital banking provider Cubus Solutions. In a statement, Tyfone’s Narendra discussed the transaction in the context of enabling financial institutions of different sizes to provide their customers with equally compelling digital experiences.

“Today success in digital banking – in fact, success in any financial technology – is all about engaged digital experiences and the ability to scale,” Narendra said. “That means scaling up to power digital growth for larger institutions and scaling down to facilitate the smaller one stay relevant.”

Digital Banking Solutions Company Tyfone Raises Capital and Announces Merger
  • Digital banking solutions company Tyfone has secured a “significant investment” from Demopolis Equity Partners.
  • The Portland, Oregon-based company also announced a merger with digital banking provider Cubus Solutions.
  • Tyfone made its Finovate debut in 2008 at FinovateSpring.

Digital banking solutions company Tyfone hit the fintech headlines with a pair of big announcements in recent days. First, the company has received a significant investment from Demopolis Equity Partners. The amount of the funding was not disclosed.

Tyfone is also announcing that it has merged with digital banking provider Cubus Solutions. The two companies will move forward under the Tyfone brand. The investment and merger are designed to help accelerate the adoption of Tyfone’s nFinia digital banking platform. The addition of Cubus’ customers, digital solutions, and expertise will help the combined entity better serve financial institutions, helping them boost revenues and efficiency.

“Today success in digital banking – in fact, success in any financial technology – is all about engaged digital experiences and the ability to scale,” Tyfone CEO Dr. Siva Narendra said. “That means scaling up to power digital growth for larger institutions and scaling down to facilitate the smaller ones (to) stay relevant.”

Cubus CEO John-Ashley Paul added: “It is rare to find two companies so culturally well-aligned that also complement each other technologically. Our best-of-breed loan payments, loan skips, e-statements, and rewards solutions will extend the Tyfone digital banking ecosystem, leading to tighter integration and a truly exceptional user experience.”

Tyfone demoed its technology at FinovateSpring in 2008. In the years since, the Portland, Oregon-based company has grown into a provider of market-leading software for credit unions and community banks. This year, Tyfone has announced partnerships with Southwest Financial, a Texas based financial institution with 9,200 members and $81 million in assets; and with Members Advantage Credit Union, a credit union based in Wisconsin Rapids with 11,000 members and $178 million in assets.

Finovate Alums Among Top Investment Targets for Top European Banks

Finovate Alums Among Top Investment Targets for Top European Banks

Earlier this year, CB Insights took a look at where fifteen of the top European banks were spending their investment dollars. The result is an interesting portrait of an industry appears very committed to three areas of fintech in particular: blockchain, financial services software, and Regtech. Of the 15 banks represented in CB Insights’ survey, all but one had invested in R3, the blockchain consortium, with ten banks investing in financial services software companies, and eight banks funding Regtech firms.

Also noteworthy is the presence of ten Finovate/FinDEVr alums among the investments. Symphony Software Foundation, an alum of our developer’s conference, FinDEVr, was the alum with the most support from among the 15 European banks. Santander was the bank with the broadest support among our alum community, backing six out of the 11 alums listed.

New Investment in Tyfone Takes Total Capital to $12 Million

New Investment in Tyfone Takes Total Capital to $12 Million

Tyfone_homepage_Aug2015

Mobile banking specialist Tyfone has more than doubled its total capital, courtesy of a summer funding round led by RPX Corporation.

The $6.6 million investment from RPX Corporation and existing investors—such as In-Q-Tel and individual investors like Steve Pawlowski and David Petraeus—puts Tyfone’s total capital at $12 million. The funds will be used to help speed the worldwide deployment of Tyfone’s ID- and transaction-security platform, and further develop the company’s banking and payment products for FIs.

Siva G. Narendra, Tyfone CEO, pointed to his company’s embrace of both biometric identity data and what he calls “securing the transaction data at the point of origin” as a difference-maker in the industry. Narendra said this “fundamentally [changes] the way companies and institutions address cybersecurity and transaction threats, be it for banking, payment or any enterprise applications.” Serving customers in a variety of industries, from banking and commerce to healthcare and government, Tyfone’s U4i1 platform and Connected Smart Card provide both a high-level identity-authentication via decentralized private keys, as well as more traditional security via single-use passwords and software keys.

Tyfone_homepage2_Aug2015

With more than 100 issued and pending patents and customers including two of the top-10 credit unions in the U.S., Tyfone was named one of the “10 Most Promising Mobile Banking Solutions Providers for 2015” by Banking CIO Outlook in July. The company is the first equity investment by RPX Corporation, according to the Portland Business Journal, which has been following the funding round since May. Geoffrey Barker, co-founder and executive director of RPX, joins Tyfone’s board of directors as part of the deal.

Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Portland, Oregon, Tyfone demonstrated its Mobile Contactless Payments with Memory Card solution at FinovateSpring 2008 in San Francisco.
