NEW YORK (Dec. 10, 2019) – University of Oregon quarterback
Justin Herbert has been named the 30th recipient of The William V. Campbell Trophy® Presented by Mazda during tonight's 62nd National Football Foundation Annual Awards Dinner Presented by ETT in New York City.
"Matching a 4.01 GPA in the classroom with his record-setting performance on the field,
Justin Herbert's exceptional accomplishments place him among the best student-athletes in the history of our sport, making him the ideal recipient of the Campbell Trophy® Presented by Mazda," said NFF President & CEO
Steve Hatchell. "He truly embodies the scholar-athlete ideal and we are proud to have him as a member of this elite fraternity. He stands as the perfect example for the next generation to emulate."
The Campbell Trophy® Presented by Mazda ranks as one of college football's most sought after and competitive awards, recognizing an individual as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership. The 24-inch, 25-pound bronze trophy, which is prominently displayed at its official home inside the New York Athletic Club, comes with a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship.
Dino Bernacchi, the chief marketing officer of Mazda North American Operations, had the honor of presenting the trophy to Herbert.
"Mazda is honored to participate in this special evening to celebrate the 30th William V. Campbell Trophy recipient,
Justin Herbert," said Bernacchi. "We recognize dedication and humility as catalysts to reach the highest potential, and we're profoundly inspired by these student-athletes' commitment to their teammates, academics and community."
A total of $223,000 was awarded tonight to Herbert and the 11 other members of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments, who comprised the list of finalists for the Campbell Trophy® Presented by Mazda. Each member of the class (listed below) claimed an $18,000 scholarship for their postgraduate educations.
"Justin and his fellow members of the 2019 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class represent more than just their standout athletic ability seen on the field," said NFF Chairman
Archie Manning, whose sons,
Peyton (Campbell Trophy® recipient) and
Eli, were NFF National Scholar-Athletes in 1997 and 2003, respectively. "Their academic achievements and their contributions as leaders in the community send a powerful message about the young men who play our sport. They have taken full advantage of the educational opportunities created by college football, and they have created a compelling legacy for others to follow."
Maintaining a remarkable 4.01 GPA, Herbert has been selected as the back-to-back Football Academic All-American of the Year while ranking in the top two in nearly every Oregon passing category. The homegrown native of Eugene, Oregon, is the Ducks' first Campbell Trophy® recipient and third NFF National Scholar-Athlete.
Herbert is set to graduate this December with a degree in science, and he plans to attend medical school one day. This season, he became the first Oregon player to earn the Pac-12 Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. The Academic All-American of the Year in both 2018 and 2019, he has been named a First Team Academic All-American three times. Herbert is a three-time First Team Academic All-District selection and a two-time Academic All-Pac-12 honoree. He has compiled nine terms with a GPA over 4.0, and he is a three-time Dean's List honoree at Oregon.
This season, Herbert has guided the Ducks to an 11-2 record and the 2019 Pac-12 title after a win over then-No. 5 Utah in the Pac-12 Championship Game this past weekend. In the 37-15 victory over the Utes, he completed 14 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown. Herbert and the No. 6 Ducks will play No. 8 Wisconsin in the 106th Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual on New Year's Day. The game will kick off at 5 p.m. ET and air on ESPN.
This season, Herbert has completed 272 passes for 3,333 yards and 32 touchdowns. The two-year captain's 32 passing touchdowns rank second in the Pac-12 and are tied for 10th nationally while his passing yards are the second most in the Pac-12. Herbert's 272 completions and 32 passing touchdowns this season are the second most and tied for third most, respectively, in a single season in Oregon history.
A finalist for the 2019 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm and Manning awards, Herbert matched an Oregon record with his 15 touchdown passes through the first five games of the season. He was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week after completing 24 passes for 280 yards and four touchdowns in Oregon's 35-31 win at then-No. 25 Washington on Oct. 19. Herbert was also a semifinalist for the 2019 Davey O'Brien, Maxwell and Walter Camp awards.
For his career, Herbert is one of just two Oregon quarterbacks to surpass 10,000 passing yards, as the senior now boasts 10,403 in second place all-time in school annals behind Heisman Trophy winner
Marcus Mariota. Herbert owns school career records for completions (813) and pass attempts (1,273) while ranking second in completion percentage (.641) and 300-yard passing games (9).
He also ranks second in program history with 95 career touchdown passes, which are the most among active FBS players and are sixth most in Pac-12 history. His 54 career touchdown passes at home at Autzen Stadium are also a program record. Oregon is 26-8 in his 34 starts over the last three seasons, and he has thrown a touchdown pass in 40 of his 41 career starts.
A semifinalist for the 2018 Davey O'Brien and Maxwell awards, Herbert earned Phil Steele First Team All-Pac-12 honors that season after becoming just the fifth Duck quarterback with a 3,000-yard passing season. Herbert led the Ducks to consecutive bowl berths in 2017 and 2018, including a win over Michigan State in the 2018 Redbox Bowl.
The first true freshman to start at quarterback for Oregon since 1983, he became the fastest player in program history to reach 4,000 passing yards (17 games) and 5,000 passing yards (21 games). During his freshman season, Herbert tied the single-game school record for passing yards when he tossed for 489 against Arizona State.
Active off the field, Herbert participated in the O Heroes "Court for Kids" service trip to Uganda in 2018, and he has helped prepare Thanksgiving baskets for disadvantaged families for multiple years. He has hosted local schoolchildren at football practices and appeared at various community service events the last three years, including field days, sports award programs and Special Olympics events.
Following tonight's Annual Awards Dinner, Herbert will be recognized as the recipient of the Campbell Trophy® Presented by Mazda at several prestigious events. On Wednesday, a luncheon will be held in his honor at the New York Athletic Club (NYAC), the official home of the trophy since 2013. From there, he will travel directly to Atlanta for ESPN's "The Home Depot College Football Awards" at the Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame on Thursday, where he will be interviewed live during the show. Finally, he will travel to New Orleans to be honored on the field during the College Football Playoff National Championship at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Jan. 13.
Herbert becomes Oregon's first recipient of the Campbell Trophy® Presented by Mazda and the school's third NFF National Scholar-Athlete, joining fellow Duck quarterbacks
Dennis Dixon (2007) and
Bill Musgrave (1990).
Launched in 1959 and celebrating its 61st year in 2019, the NFF National Scholar-Athlete program became the first initiative in history to award postgraduate scholarships based on a player's combined academic, athletic and community accomplishments, and the program has awarded $11.7 million to 866 top athletes since its inception. Candidates must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.
The centerpiece to the NFF's scholar-athlete program, the William V. Campbell Trophy® Presented by Mazda was first awarded in 1990. It is named in honor of the late
Bill Campbell, the former chairman of Intuit, former player and head coach at Columbia University and the 2004 recipient of the NFF's Gold Medal.
In September, Mazda
announced a three-year partnership to become the presenting sponsor of the Campbell Trophy®, kicking off the automaker's
