State Grid

State Grid in Fortune Rankings

Fortune Global 500

The unassuming name of China’s national electricity service may not convey its colossal scale: State Grid supplies the vast majority of the country’s power, employs hundreds of thousands of people, and is among the very biggest firms in the world by revenue. In addition to China, State Grid is a partial owner of grids in Australia, Portugal, and other countries around the world. The Chinese government created State Grid in 2002 with the broader goal of increasing the country’s generation and transmission capacities. While traditionally focused on nuclear and coal power, State Grid has also become a major player in renewables.
