🌍 Global Water Use in Agriculture: Essential Insights 🌾 In most regions worldwide, over 70% of freshwater is used for agriculture. By 2050, with the global population projected to reach 9 billion, agricultural production needs to increase by 50%, and water withdrawals by 15%, to meet food demands. Water use in agriculture varies significantly across income groups: 🌱 Low-income countries (Ethiopia): 90% of all water withdrawals go to agriculture. 🌱 Lower-middle-income countries (India): 88% of water withdrawals are used for agriculture, with only 4% for industry. 🌱 Upper-middle-income countries (China): Agriculture accounts for 66% of water use, while industry uses 16%. 🌱 High-income countries (United States): Agriculture uses 44% of water withdrawals, and industry uses 39%.   💡 Currently, only 20-50% of water withdrawn actually reaches the crops, with significant losses occurring before it gets to farms and during farm application. This presents numerous opportunities for improved water management, which is a shared responsibility.   👨🏻🌾 Agriculture heavily relies on river water for activities, and most of this water is used for irrigation. Inefficient water pumping practices, particularly over-extraction during low river discharge, exacerbate water scarcity and negatively impact ecosystem health.   💧 At BWI, we provide advanced hydrological services, such as river discharge and water level monitoring and forecasting, to help manage finite water resources effectively. Our decision support system optimises pumping times during low river discharge, minimising water usage and maintaining lower pollutant concentrations, thus ensuring sustainable water availability for agriculture and positively impacting water quality. 🌊 Did you know that since 1995, floods have accounted for a staggering 47% of all weather-related disasters? 🌧️ 🌍  The most recent estimates show that 1.81 billion people—23% of the global population—are directly exposed to flood risks (Nature Communications, 2022). This alarming risk is particularly acute in low- and middle-income countries and is expected to escalate further. 💡 Flood frequency has also surged, averaging 171 incidents per year from 2005 to 2014, compared to 127 per year in the preceding decade (CRED/UNISDR, 2015). While flood risk is a global challenge, a study by Rentschler et al. (2022) reveals that East Asia faces the highest number of flood-exposed individuals, with 668 million people at risk—approximately 28% of the region’s population. The dangers are intensified by climate change and hazardous urbanisation practices, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive flood risk mitigation strategies. 📉 Trends from 1870 to 2016 reveal a steady increase in both the affected area and population, though fatalities have decreased—suggesting improvements in emergency and healthcare systems worldwide. Among the effective policies recommended by WHO (2017) is the identification of flood risk zones and the implementation of flood-sensitive urban planning. These preventive and preparedness-focused measures are crucial for safeguarding public health against the rising threat of floods. 💧 Strengthen your preparedness with BWI’s monitoring and forecasting solutions .🌍 #ClimateChange #FloodRisk #SustainableDevelopment #UrbanPlanning #DisasterPreparedness #Resilience #PublicHealth #WaterManagement #Hydrology #StartUp #Water #Eau

💧 The True Value of Freshwater Ecosystems: A Critical Economic Perspective 💧   📈 The WWF 2023 report reveals a striking fact: the annual economic value of water and freshwater ecosystems is estimated to exceed €11 trillion in Europe. This staggering figure reflects the total monetary worth of the myriad benefits and services these ecosystems provide each year.   💡 However, the deteriorating condition of our freshwater ecosystems poses a significant threat to these substantial economic benefits. As these ecosystems decline, their capacity to support vital economic activities such as agriculture and clean water supply weakens, potentially leading to considerable economic losses. According to the World Bank (2016), water scarcity, intensified by climate change, could cost some regions up to 6% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2050 due to impacts on agriculture, health, and incomes, potentially triggering migration and even conflict.   📊 Economic modelling suggests that poor water-management policies can worsen the adverse growth impacts of climate change, while effective policies can help mitigate these effects. Positive impacts on economic growth can be seen through initiatives like irrigation, hydropower, and flood management (UNDP, 2016).   🔍 At BWI, we are dedicated to improving water management efficiency for various stakeholders. Our innovative hydrological services help mitigate the negative impacts of climate-induced water stress while enhancing the positive contributions of water to economic growth.   🤝 Join us in addressing this crucial global issue. Connect with us to discover how our solutions can contribute to sustainable water management worldwide, ensuring the preservation and optimal use of this invaluable resource. 🌍🏞️   #climatechange #water #valueofwater #eau #hydrology #irrigation #agriculture #watermanagement #freshwater #waterefficiency #hydropower
