Martin, Surface and Coatings Technology 482 (2024) 130713. 👀 Link 👀 https://lnkd.in/ecKyUrKF 📖 Abstract 📖 This collaborative work involves the IJL group “plasmas-processes-surfaces”, the LEM3 group “thermomechanic of fast contact” and the ICB/UTBM group “metallurgical processs, durability, materials”. This work is part of Arthur Maizeray’s Ph.D. thesis that was partly supported by the Labex DAMAS. Plasma-assisted electrochemical surface treatments belong to a new emerging surface engineering discipline, which includes plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), plasma electrolytic nitriding (PEN)/carburizing (PEC) and plasma electrolytic polishing (PEP). In these technologies, micro-discharges appearing in an aqueous solution are used to promote complex plasma chemical interactions with the processed metal surface. Studies are focusing on the promising PEO process for rapidly synthesizing protective ceramic coatings on lightweight metals (Al, Mg, Ti). However, this process remains ineffective for widespread ferrous-based metals that can also face wear and corrosion issues. To broaden the use of the PEO process for any metals, the main strategy of the project is to apply a duplex surface treatment that consists in cold-spraying an aluminium coating on a metallic substrate, and then in partly PEO processing this sprayed layer. Using various spraying configurations (co-spraying, multilayer spraying, addition of ceramic particles) and oxidation conditions, the development of new ceramic-based composite coatings is made possible and still under investigation. Specifically, the present study focused on the use of this duplex treatment to produce oxide layers on aluminium metal matrix composite coatings, including dispersed hard and micrometric a-Al2O3 particles in various proportions. Results point out that the incorporation of these particles into the cold-sprayed aluminium coating triggers the transition to the specific “soft” PEO sparking regime earlier and results in a slight decrease in the friction coefficient and wear rate of the produced PEO oxide layers as well.

The main difference is the partial or total absence of transition carbides. In the present work, the effect of the carbon segregation on the mitigation of the precipitation of the latter is analyzed by combining multi-scale experimental investigations with a new precipitation model accounting for the carbon heterogeneities induced by the segregation. The full precipitation sequence is considered in order to study the impact of the segregation not only on the transition carbides, but also on the cementite which forms afterwards. The experimental work includes APT characterization of carbon segregation, in-situ HEXRD experiments to reveal precipitation kinetics, and TEM observations for carbide size measurements. The here-in developed precipitation mean-field and physics-based model combines two previous ones dedicated to the nucleation and growth of transition carbides and cementite and to the segregation of carbon at dislocations. It is shown that, even after water-quench, carbon atoms are already segregated on dislocations. The mitigation of transition carbide precipitation is caused by the presence of such segregations, which decrease the driving force for the transition carbide nucleation and enhance cementite precipitation. In agreement with previous experiments, the model also demonstrates that inside a martensitic microstructure, the precipitation sequence is different between the first (formed close to Ms temperature) and the last martensite (formed at room temperature) formed upon cooling, because of the difference in dislocation density, which influences the intensity of the segregation phenomenon.
