Helping to feed the world sustainably
À propos
The International Fertilizer Association (IFA) was founded in 1927 and is the only global fertilizer association, with around 500 members encompassing all actors in the fertilizer value chain – from producers through traders and distributors, as well as service providers, agtech startups, advisors, research organizations and NGOs – with a mission to promote efficient and responsible production, distribution and use of plant nutrients. This mission plays a critical role in helping to feed the world sustainably. IFA represents providers of plant nutrition solutions. Members include fertilizer producers, traders and distributors, as well as their associations, service providers to the industry, research organizations, ag-tech startups and non-governmental organizations. IFA does not condone or endorse price related messages being posted on IFA social media sites.

A shoutout to a former World Bank Group colleague Vijaya Ramachandran - it could not have been better said. Þ "Manufactured" does not mean bad - try to live a day without touching anything not manufactured Þ "Synthetic" is not the opposite of natural - try to live a day without touching anything synthetic Þ And poverty is not something to endure for a lifetime - there is a way to produce more food and get out of the subsistence-derived hunger. The key is to identify the root cause of the problem. And – as Vijaya correctly highlights - at the core of African food insecurity are the continent’s notoriously low crop yields—the amount of produce farmers harvest relative to the area of land they farm. We can do better! #foodsecurity International Fertilizer Association (IFA) Achim Dobermann Patrick Heffer Corey Rosenbusch
Analysis: Misguided activist attacks on Africa's push to increase the use of synthetic fertilizer — 'Maintaining low agricultural yields won't accomplish the climate and environmental goals rich Westerners purport to support'

I am delighted for IFA to have been granted a seat at the IMO table. Plant nutrients are one of the most traded goods, and shipping matters - greatly. And more than that, ammonia as a potential shipping fuel of choice can no longer be ignored. Ready to contribute to the work of IMO, in order to help feed the world sustainably. #internationaltrade #shipping #foodsecurity Yara International CF Industries ICL Industrial Products SABIC Agri-Nutrients OCP Group Ultrabulk A/S
IFA has been granted consultative status by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as of July 2024. IFA CEO and Director General Alzbeta Klein, CFA Klein shared her enthusiasm: ‘IFA is pleased to have gained IMO consultative status. The fertilizer and shipping industries are closely linked, with fertilizers being heavily reliant on shipping for the global distribution of plant nutrients, and with ammonia, one of the key ingredients of nitrogen fertilizer products, having the potential to be used as a low carbon shipping fuel of the future. The many intersections of the two industries and the scientific and data-backed approach of IFA make this a natural partnership. We are looking forward to contributing to the IMO’s important work and to furthering our mission of helping to feed the world sustainably.’ Read our announcement here: bit.ly/4c1GmeU Alzbeta Klein, CFA | Patrick Heffer | Claire Newell (Chart.PR) | Yvonne Harz-Pitre | Margot Clifford Laguette | Annie COHEN | Mariana Borges

✨ Meet the SPRPN panel members ✨ Introducing Fang-Jie Zhao, who is a Professor at the College of Resources and Environmental Sciences at Nanjing Agricultural University, China. His research focuses on the biogeochemistry of essential micronutrients and toxic metals in soil-plant systems, the genetics and molecular mechanisms of how plants take up trace elements, the biofortification of essential micronutrients as well as the bioremediation of contaminated soils. 🌱 Ultimately, Fang-Jie’s research aims to enhance essential micronutrients and minimize the accumulation of toxic metals in food crops for the benefit of human health and agricultural sustainability. 💚 Fang-Jie received a BSc from Fujian Agricultural and Forestry University, a MSc from Nanjing Agricultural University and a PhD from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. He is the recipient of the 2022 International Fertilizer Association’s Norman Borlaug Plant Nutrition Award and the 2024 TWAS Award in Agricultural Sciences by the World Academy of Sciences. Throwback Thursday... 💡Our IFA Annual Conference 2024 shipping session provided some thought-provoking and ultimately prescient content for delegates at the end of May, pre-empting as it did this insightful piece from Bloomberg. During the second part of our keynote session, expert speakers from across the fertilizer value chain came together to discuss the varied challenges facing shipping, from the war in Ukraine to high inflation, interest rates, and conflict in the Middle East and how these factors continue to impact shipping routes and markets. Our panel agreed that in the future, more disruption is likely both in terms of geopolitical issues and the energy transition. The potential impact of this disruption on global inflation levels is undoubtedly a further test of system resilience and an issue that our industry – along with many others – needs to monitor closely.
