Today marks the 78th Independance day of India, every year on the 15th of August, dons a festive spirit to celebrate its hard-earned freedom. Since 1947, this tradition continues with the Prime Minister addressing the nation, invoking a sense of unity and patriotism among millions of Indians.
The streets come alive with patriotic rallies and parades, vibrant with the colors of the national flag. Schools, colleges, and community organizations organize parades and cultural programs, featuring patriotic songs, dances, and dramas that narrate tales of bravery and resilience.
We reached out to our Indian colleagues to learn more about how they celebrate this momentous day.
Jayanthi Kurup, Logistics and Purchase Assistant, starts her day by hoisting the flag with her family in their community. She dresses in tricolor clothing, savoring a breakfast that includes jalebis in the hues of the national flag.
The celebration continues with a delicious lunch featuring chicken biryani, enjoyed with loved ones. Her evening is filled with joyous festivities in the neighborhood.
Traditional attire plays a significant role in the celebrations. Women often wear sarees in saffron, white, and green colors of the Indian flag. Men typically don kurta-pajamas or sherwanis in patriotic colors.
Food is an essential part of the celebrations, with many households preparing special Independence Day dishes. Tricolor sweets like barfi, Motichoor Ladoo, Jalebis along with regional delicacies such as biryani and samosas, add flavor to the festivities.
kimaya salvi, Production Asst. Manager, starts her day with flag hoisting in her society, followed by traditional sweets like jalebis and kaju katli.
She dresses in national day-themed clothing and enjoys a special thali for lunch, which includes Gulab jamun, puris, shahi pulav, papad, and salad. "I always look forward to this day," she shares, "as it fills me with pride and reminds me of the importance of our freedom."
India's Independence Day is a day of pride and joy for every Indian, celebrating unity and looking forward to a bright future together.
