🌟 Back from an incredible week at EFMC-ISMC in Rome! We were thrilled to attend insightful talks and engage with passionate researchers. With over a hundred presentations, it is hard to choose highlights, but here are a few standouts: Prof. David MacMillan introduced innovative metallophotoredox and SH2 mechanisms enabling syntheses through new chemical routes, along with a groundbreaking method to couple a photoredox catalyst with an antibody for cellular biological pathway exploration. This approach promises to pave the way for numerous breakthroughs! Prof. Véronique Gouverneur dazzled with pioneering methods in fluorine chemistry, including enantioselective catalysis processes and sustainable fluorine sourcing. Her work on new methods enabling the late-stage incorporation of 18F into small molecules for PET imaging, as well as the development of a simple, mild and safe method to improve fluorine sourcing, is set to become a hot topic for process and medicinal chemists alike. Dr Sabine Hadida of Vertex Pharmaceuticals shared an inspiring 20-year journey in cystic fibrosis treatment, leading to a breakthrough triple drug combination, capable of correcting and potentiating misfolded CFTR. She also outlined future plans to address unmet needs in cystic fibrosis patients, especially those who do not produce CFTR. A very inspiring conference for medicinal chemists! Prof. Craig Crews introduced exciting concepts promising to revolutionize treatment options, including PhosTACs, which enable an enzyme to be targeted through multiple pathways, and RIPTACs, which offer the possibility of targeting tumors with otherwise poor therapeutic index ligands. During our poster session, we were pleased to have enriching discussions on the presentation from Dr Bertrand Heckmann entitled: "Identification of FIB992-093, a highly selective discoidin domain receptor 1 (DDR1) inhibitor with excellent PK properties to explore the potential of DDR1 inhibition in fibrotic diseases". 👏 👏 Congratulations to all the speakers, poster presenters, exhibitors, sponsors and to the organizer LD Organisation - Scientific Conference Producers. 👋 Arrivederci Roma, and see you in Basel in 2026! #EFMCISMC2024 #DrugDiscovery  #MedicinalChemistry #medchem #InnovativeScience

September 4, Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Awareness Day. 🔎 Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a chronic genetic disorder characterized by the uncontrolled growth of fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys. These cysts gradually replace healthy tissue, leading to high blood pressure, complications, and often kidney failure.* ADPKD (Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease) affects over 12 million people globally, making it the 4th leading cause of kidney failure in chronic kidney disease patients. 💡 Organic chemistry literature spotlight 💡 We highly recommend reading this insightful article from F. González-Bobes team, which illustrates that Ir-catalyzed N-alkylation of alcohols, using the Borrowing Hydrogen approach, can be a powerful tool, from medchem lab to process chemistry. This approach offers the BMS team a redox-neutral, step-economic, safer —avoiding use of NaBH3CN—, and more efficient synthetic route: ✅ Borrowing hydrogen strategy allowed to circumvent the low efficiency of the oxidation/reductive amination 2-step procedure, explained by the poor nucleophilicity of the 2-aminopyridine scaffold. ✅ Moreover, this was a safer alternative as hazardous NaBH3CN was required for the reductive amination. ✅ Monitoring through infrared spectroscopy supported the in situ formation of an aldehyde intermediate through a redox neutral process.   👏 Congratulations to the authors : 'Development of a Mild and Efficient Process for Ir-Catalyzed N-Alkylation of 4-Bromopyridin-2-amine with a Primary Alcohol via Borrowing Hydrogen' Francisco Gonzalez Bobes et al.
