At Touton, we are constantly seeking community-based solutions to address the social, economic, and environmental challenges in our cocoa supply chain. In Ghana’s remote rural areas, girls often encounter difficulties accessing appropriate feminine hygiene products, including menstrual protections. This lack of access can lead to absenteeism from school, socialisation issues, and health risks from using alternative menstrual protections. Additionally, poor disposal of menstrual waste contributes to environmental pollution, further reducing community welfare. As members of the World Cocoa Foundation | #CocoaandForestsInitiative, we aim to reduce #deforestation in cocoa-producing regions by empowering local communities to be economically, environmentally, and socially resilient. To address menstrual health challenges in these communities, we have partnered with two specialised organisations in Ghana: Days for Girls International Ghana and GAIA Menstrual Products Ghana. Together, we have provided school-going girls with access to #environmentally friendly menstrual products, education on reproductive health and emphasis on proper disposal to prevent environmental pollution. These actions will enable young girls to continue attending school, protect the environment and relieve the economic pressure on the most vulnerable farming families. Doris, one of the girls who benefited from our program, shares her experience below. She explains the impact deforestation has had on her community and how she and other girls are encouraging their parents to plant fruit trees. These trees not only act as shade for cocoa plants, increasing cocoa production and boosting their parents' income, but they also provide nutritious fruits for the girls, especially beneficial during their menstrual cycles. As members of the United Nations Global Compact and sectoral initiatives such as the World Cocoa Foundation | #CocoaandForestInitiatives, we are committed to advancing the #SDGs set out by the United Nations. We are particularly dedicated promoting decent work and economic growth (#SDG 8) and addressing income inequalities and discrimination (#SDG10) within and among countries. Our sustainability approach is anchored in collaborating with our partner producers to facilitate sustainable agricultural production and increase living incomes. To achieve this objective, we support the development of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs). These self-managed groups, often led by women, provide access to credit, empowering the cocoa farmers we work with and enhance their economic well-being. In the past season, we supported producers from Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire in establishing 868 Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs). These savings associations have provided members with easy access to soft loans at favorable interest rates, enabling them to invest in small businesses. This additional income stream has supplemented their cocoa sales earnings, removing the need to cut down trees to expand their farms for higher yields, thus preventing deforestation. The increased income has also allowed members to support their children's education and enhance their overall quality of life. Hannah Danso, the Chairlady of a VSLA established in Ghana, elaborates on how this association has been beneficial to her and the other members: "We are able to make enough money to invest in trading and other businesses, as well as cover medical bills and cater to our children’s school needs, among other things." Following from our previous post and in celebration of #WorldEnvironmentDay, we are proud to highlight the Cavally Forest Reforestation and Protection Landscape project, a key initiative we've been involved in since last year. Initiated by the Société de Développement des Forêts Ivoiriennes (#SODEFOR) and the Ministry of Water and Forests (#MINEF) together with Earthworm Foundation and Nestlé in 2020, this project aims to protect the Cavally Forest Reserve while supporting the surrounding communities to become more resilient and engage in efforts to conserve and restore biodiversity. As members of the #CocoaandForestsInitiative, we are committed to continuing our efforts to protect forests, particularly in cocoa-producing countries. The Cavally Project has been working closely with local communities in outlying areas to improve their resilience and create the right conditions for them to take ownership of forest conservation. During the official launch of Phase 2 in June 2023, Joseph Larrose, Deputy Managing Director of the Touton Group, explained why engaging in major landscape projects goes beyond CSR commitments and makes business sense for trading companies: "As a major cocoa supply chain manager in Ivory Coast, our sustainability teams are already working hand in hand with producers and communities to build sustainable value chains. Previous experiences have proven that landscape approaches are an effective way to create healthy ecosystems for cocoa, coffee, and exotic ingredients to grow. When forests are under threat, it is the very heart of our business that is at stake.” Want to learn more about the Cavally Landscape? Check out our interview with the Africa Regional Director of Earthworm Foundation in our latest CFI report: https://bit.ly/3X744CJ #CocoaAndForestsInitiative #CavallyForestLandscapeProject #ForestProtectionAndRestoration
