🌍 Here is the 8th topic of #WaterSchool! Our planet is facing a #watercrisis, but the good news is that solutions exist and they can have an immediate impact. To tackle this challenge, we need to start by understanding water: where it comes from, how much is available, and where it goes. Next, we must conserve water by finding ways to conserve living standards while using less water. And finally, we should only increase water extraction when absolutely necessary, keeping in mind the social and environmental consequences. ♻️ Agriculture alone accounts for 70% of global water withdrawals, and there are countless ways to reduce this, from adopting agroecology to changing our consumption habits. Nature-based solutions are also key, focusing on restoring ecosystems and working with nature instead of against it. These solutions not only benefit water but also contribute to resource management, risk reduction, biodiversity, quality of life, and soil health. Together, they have a positive impact on the #watercycle and help mitigate #climatechange. 🌱

🌊 In this 7th #WaterSchool topic, we’ll talk about water and the climate! The water we rely on and the climate we experience are two sides of the same coin. Our planet’s #watercycle maintains a delicate balance, and climate change is tipping the scales in ways that affect us all. 🌧️ A warmer atmosphere can hold more water vapor for every degree it heats up. This means that, in addition to the increased risk of droughts, 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲. These changes affect water availability and quality, impacting both the environment and our daily lives. Our interference through water consumption, land use changes, like deforestation, and #climatechange all affect ecosystems and the stability of the water cycle itself. Certain tipping points, once crossed, cause irreversible changes — like the decline of the Amazon rainforest 🌳 or Arctic ice loss 🧊.

💧 Welcome to the 6th topic of our #WaterSchool! Did you know your morning coffee has a water footprint? The concept of "virtual water" reveals the hidden water consumed in the creation of the everyday products you use. For example, it takes 140 liters of water to produce just one cup of coffee! Every product has a #waterfootprint, which is 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀. Imagine the water required to grow the coffee beans for your morning cup or the clothes you wear. These hidden costs are significant, and understanding them is the first step toward a more sustainable future. 🌍 🍅 Even simple actions like picking out tomatoes grown in water-stressed regions affect #water resources and local communities, just like everything else we do. Understanding virtual water helps us see the bigger picture and encourages us to make more sustainable decisions.
