    📰 LASER FOCUS WORLD - Quantum continues to be a buoyant field where photonics will play a critical role Quantum is a strategic #technology domain with multifaceted implications. #Quantum #computing offers promising applications in healthcare, environmental conservation, and artificial intelligence (#AI)—extending the boundaries of digital computing beyond current limitations. While quantum and post-quantum cryptography represent more established fields with existing economic players and commercial solutions, the standardization of post-quantum cryptography remains incomplete, albeit with fewer scientific and engineering unknowns compared to scalable quantum computing. Beyond quantum computing, quantum cryptography has the potential to revolutionize encryption, but it poses implications for state sovereignty—particularly safeguarding sensitive communications. In sensing applications, quantum exists as a real market but is still limited to niche applications. And compared to cryptography and sensing, the maturity of quantum computing is lagging.     📰 EE TIMES - Surveying the landscape of smartphone processors Yole Group investigated flagship smartphone application processors and published a summary of the analysis in a study titled “APU – Smartphone SoC Floorplan Comparison 2024.” The study crossed multiple technical fields, from foundry technology to packaging and cost analysis, with particular emphasis on system-on-chip architecture.(...) There is commonality between the six design groups but also key differences to their approaches. This class of processors all depends on Arm designs. Beyond a bit of mixing and matching within the different designs, the most notable difference is that Apple designers use Arm IP but assemble the logical functions into their own physical designs. Other hashtag #silicon teams prefer to streamline the process by using hard macros from Arm. Apple spends more effort in the process of optimizing the design, but they are also the only company responsible for both the hardware and software of a single brand.     📰 EE TIMES - Apple R1 opens new avenues in spatial computing The Apple Vision Pro headset represents a new milestone in computing. The concept of spatial computing is a new paradigm and the first new class of product introduced by Apple since the #iPhone in 2007. Likewise, the R1 is a completely new chip design. It is not very illuminating to repeat that Apple made the iPhone, but the iPhone really made Apple the corporate behemoth of recent years. The iPhone represents just over half of Apple revenues, according to 2023 annual report numbers. Banking on much upside at this point would be a mistake. Indeed, iPhone revenues have declined (2%) along with the iPad, while the Mac line has dropped significantly (27%). Apple enthusiasts have waited patiently for the next big thing after the iPhone. The company appeared to oblige, even devoting resources to developing an electric car. However, Apple management needed another big hit much more than what their fans or the tech press were expecting.
