This article focuses on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) history marked by several controversies, and discusses some advances of its Fifth Assessment Report published between September 2013 and October 2014. Our objectives are first to understand whether the views of climate sceptics may still be considered credible, and then to review the current climate state by focusing on the realism of an upper limit of the global average surface temperature warming of 2°C. This article focuses on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) history marked by several controversies, and discusses some advances of its Fifth Assessment Report published between September 2013 and October 2014. Our objectives are first to understand whether the views of climate sceptics may still be considered credible, and then to review the current climate state by focusing on the realism of an upper limit of the global average surface temperature warming of 2°C. This objective was indeed decided by the 16th Conference of Parties (COP-16) held in Cancun, Mexico, in 2010, following the publication of the IPCC Third Assessment Report that clearly indicated that the consequences of climate change could become irreversible beyond this threshold.
