  • The European Union revisits capitalism for the sake of people and planet

    As Joseph Stiglitz puts it in his book “Free Fall”, the 2008 financial crisis was the “near-death experience of the global economy” — subsequently putting into question the sustainability of American capitalism. Moving from Franklin D. Roosevelt’s interventionist policies of the “Big Government” ensuring the performance of the economy and guaranteeing the social welfare of Americans, to Reaganomic measures known for widespread tax cuts, decreased social spending, increased military spending…

    As Joseph Stiglitz puts it in his book “Free Fall”, the 2008 financial crisis was the “near-death experience of the global economy” — subsequently putting into question the sustainability of American capitalism. Moving from Franklin D. Roosevelt’s interventionist policies of the “Big Government” ensuring the performance of the economy and guaranteeing the social welfare of Americans, to Reaganomic measures known for widespread tax cuts, decreased social spending, increased military spending, deregulation… America’s relationship with capitalism shifted, with the latter policies dominating even beyond the Reagan years. These policies, as well as cronyism set the stage for the crash of 2008, creating a global crisis and a wake-up call for many — particularly the European Union (EU), who has taken this opportunity to do capitalism differently.
