The world is warming at an alarming rate. People need ways to stay cool without depending on heavy energy drains such as air conditioning, which accounts for 12% of our energy footprint. We asked ourselves a question: how can our clothes help keep people cooler?

    What is CoolLife?
Meet the world’s first thermally transparent fabric.

CoolLife is the only infrared-transparent fabric that releases virtually 100 percent of your body heat and cools your body temperature by two degrees.

    How does it work?
CoolLife’s infrared transparency allows your body heat to escape and your body temperature to drop, creating a continuous cooling effect unlike any other apparel. Polyethylene, a sustainable, recyclable polymer, transfers body heat away from the skin more efficiently than any other performance fabric in the world.

    Why is it better?
Polyethylene (PE) is the most sustainable among natural and synthetic textiles in the world, according to the Materials Sustainability Index.

Engineering PE fibers uses less energy and water than traditional materials. They can be solution dyed and dry extruded, resulting in additional water savings.

CoolLife delivers more effective cooling with less environmental impact for a uniquely cooler, drier, more comfortable experience.

The MegaWarm jacket is the ultimate LifeLabs innovation, giving you the warmth you need at the top of a mountain or on the coldest winter days in the city. Fully waterproof and remarkably light for its scale and coverage, the MegaWarm Jacket defies common standards for insulated apparel. With the highest CLO rating of any jacket in existence (9.25), MegaWarm is the planet’s warmest jacket.

    What is CLO?

CLO is a value that describes the degree of insulation provided by an article of clothing. The higher an item’s CLO rating, the warmer (and more comfortable) it will keep you.

    Details

We took every measure to optimize the performance of our materials, from the patented metallized shell to the “boxed baffles” that contain our 800-fill power down. These more evenly distribute down inside the jacket, eliminating the cold spots caused by traditional quilt-through baffles. This supports even more reflectivity of infrared heat back to the body.

Comfort is maximized at every point of skin contact. Brushed jersey ups the cozy factor by lining the interior collar and chin guard. A lightly-gathered taffeta gasket traps air in the core body area, without adding weight. A rib knit baseball collar eliminates draft at the neck, while rib knit cuffs hug the wrists and seal in warmth. The fully adjustable hood is tailored to fit over a beanie/ball cap, and bears a firm, adjustable hood brim. A fully taped outer shell delivers true waterproofing.

Staying warm is increasingly important as the world experiences more pronounced weather extremes. We asked ourselves a question: how can we help people stay warmer while reducing the environmental impact of our clothing?

    What is WarmLife?
Fabric that warms, so the earth doesn’t have to. WarmLife is a proprietary technology that creates warmer, breathable apparel with less material. It’s warmth without restriction.

    Why is it better?
WarmLife delivers clothing that is 30% warmer than comparable items. Our WarmLife technology is also lighter and more packable  than apparel that uses virgin or recycled insulation.

    How does it work?
WarmLife uses less than a paper clip’s worth of aluminum to reflect 100% of your radiant body heat back onto your skin, with 30 percent less material than similar items for a higher warmth-to-weight ratio. WarmLife allows you to pack lighter, move more freely and lower your environmental footprint.

Our unique production process allows us to work with a range of fabrics including ultra-breathable, lightweight fabric that ensures the most comfortable fit.

For inventing a breathable performance-wear fabric that keeps moisture out and sweat at bay

In 2019, the outdoor brand launched Futurelight, an ultrathin synthetic fabric with microscopic perforations on it that are both waterproof and breathable. North Face launched the fabric in jackets for running and skiing, but plans to incorporate it into many other products including pants and T-shirts.

Waterproof clothing tends to be stuffy to wear, which is why The North Face developed FUTURELIGHT. At first glance the company’s FUTURELIGHT jacket might look like a traditional windbreaker, but the fabric uses new nanospinning technology to be extra breathable. Products in the FUTURELIGHT line range from $120 to $749. —Emily Price

In addition to FUTURELIGHT materials, four proprietary technologies are found throughout the line. These include new down baffle construction, octagonal-shaped yarn (for higher thermal performance in fleece), a moisture-expelling material with hydrophobic inner yarns, and more.

Working its way down, the line reimagines 8,000m boots with low-top hikers that fit inside insulating overboots in high-altitude situations. Finally, a sub-3-pound single-wall tent made from breathable FUTURELIGHT fabric rounds out this incredible package of gear built for the tallest peaks on the planet.

Waterproof, breathable and stretchable at the same time – for the first time a clothing brand manages to successfully squeeze all three properties into one material: please welcome The North Face FUTURELIGHT technology – the beginning of a new generation of outdoor clothing. The revolutionary material is produced with a nanospinning process, which can be customized and adapted to the production of different textiles. This technology creates nanoscale pores in the material ensuring vapour and air permeability and making the material extremely breathable. At the same time, the openings are so small, that no water can get through from the outside. This stretchy and sturdy material provides an excellent fit and is therefore the ideal fabric for a wide selection of clothing and equipment. The innovative FUTURELIGHT fully convinced our jury on long, sweaty hikes in the pouring rain. We are looking forward to future products!

Just picture: A shell so breathable you can keep it on through high-output activities, yet also so protective that it will keep you warm and dry on the way down. That was the directive given to TNF’s materials team. The result is FutureLight. Created using a process called nanospinning, where strings of polymer are extruded out through thousands of minuscule nozzles to form porous layers, FutureLight fabric allows for incredible breathability while also deflecting moisture and whatever else the high alpine throws its way. In addition to its technological advantages, the FutureLight material is surprisingly pliable and soft to the touch—a fabric you want to keep wearing all day.

It used to be that Gore-Tex was your only option if you wanted a waterproof but breathable jacket, but after seeing and wearing what The North Face brought to the show this year, it's clear that there's a new sheriff in town. The company's new Futurelight fabric is lighter and thinner, and orders of magnitude more breathable -- in addition to being completely waterproof. Functionally speaking, this means that excessive moisture won't build up inside your jacket if you start to sweat. In fact, you probably won't start to sweat in the first place. It's seriously that breathable.

To achieve this minor miracle, Digital Trends reporter Kraig Becker wrote, "the North Face had to completely go back to the drawing board to design and create an entirely new fabric. The company used a technique known as nanospinning to weave the fibers that make up Futurelight on a sub-microscopic level. This technique allowed The North Face to incorporate nano-sized holes within the material itself, creating a high level of porosity. In short, it was able to create a fabric that lets air move freely through the fibers, while remaining waterproof at the same time. "
