CLIMACT has investigated for the CeRAC - Centre for Risk assessment of climate change whether Belgium is living in its safe operating space or not. Conclusions are crystal clear: Belgium exceeds its “fair share” of the global safe operating space for most planetary boundaries. This is even more the case when considering Belgian consumption.   The analysis confirmed that climate and biodiversity risks should be prioritized in next risk assessments.   Want to know more? I am delighted to announce that my project: “Resilient oceans: studying deep-sea sediments to understand the climate” has been selected, and I am now officially #YoungOceanAdvocate in Portugal! 🌊 I have the pleasure of joining a large community of young Europeans, as a member of Youth4Ocean Forum 🤜🏽🤛🏽. 💡 Studying deep-sea sediments is crucial to understand Earth's climate and oceans because they contain a wealth of historical data. By analysing these sediment layers, we can reconstruct past environmental conditions, revealing valuable information about temperature fluctuations, ocean currents and sea level changes. This information is essential for predicting and mitigating the impacts of climate changes, including sea level rise, extreme weather events, and changes in ocean ecosystems. 🌍 Ultimately, the benefits for people are multiple, from better informed climate policies, and disaster preparedness, to sustainable resource management, and the preservation of coastal communities and ecosystems. 👩🏽🔬 Research on deep-sea sediments is a cornerstone of our efforts to preserve the future of the planet and strengthen our resilience in the face of environmental challenges! #scienceforall #Youth4Ocean #OceanAdvocacy #eu4ocean #ECOP

The PufferTouch proved to be a game-changer in communicating cutting-edge climate and environmental research from the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) team. With its awe-inspiring visuals and interactive menus, it brought vital climate data to life in a way that was both engaging and informative - igniting curiosity and encouraging meaningful discussions about our planet's future. And the adventure continues - The same PufferTouch unit that wowed at the UK National Space Conference has now journeyed to Dubai for COP28, which is now underway at Expo City. As over 70,000 delegates, including heads of state and world leaders, gather in the city for one of the most important international events to take action on climate change, The PufferTouch is on a mission to inspire and educate even more people about the need for action. #MercatorOcean International evolves into an Intergovernmental Organization: Mercator International Center for the Ocean (#MercatorICO)🌐🤝 Following the One Ocean Summit's Brest Declaration in Feb 2022, signed by France, Spain, Italy, Norway, Portugal, and the UK, the transition of Mercator Ocean into an IGO is now a landmark outcome of the United Nations Ocean Conference (#UNOC) set for June 2025 in Nice. ➡️ On Feb 6, 2024, France hosted a high-level meeting with all 6 founding States, marking a pivotal step toward the creation of the Mercator International Center for the Ocean (#MercatorICO).   Next Steps: 📜 Adoption of the draft Convention 🖊️ Plans for signature and initiation of ratification process 🌍 Official establishment at UNOC 2025.   Mercator ICO's Vision: 🌐 Global leader in digital Ocean technology and Ocean prediction 🌊 Supporting states and international organizations in addressing Ocean, climate, and biodiversity challenges 🤝 Continue development in Europe and worldwide   The IGO, governed by Member States, will uphold its commitment to providing reliable Ocean information, building on the success of Mercator Ocean International.
