📃Scientific paper: Personality Assessment with Temperament and Character Inventory in Parkinson's Disease. Abstract: International audience; INTRODUCTION: There is a growing interest in personality evaluation in Parkinson's disease (PD), following observations of specific temperaments in PD patients. Therefore, our objective was to evaluate personality dimensions from the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) in a cohort of fluctuating PD patients considered for deep brain stimulation. METHODS: Fluctuating PD patients from the PREDISTIM cohort were included. Description of TCI dimensions and comparison with a French normative cohort were performed. Pearson correlations between TCI dimensions and motor, behavioral and cognitive variables were investigated. Structural and internal consistency analysis of the TCI were further assessed. RESULTS: The 570 PD patients presented significant higher scores in Harm Avoidance, Reward Dependence, Persistence, Self-Directedness and Cooperativeness and significant lower scores in Self-Transcendence compared to the French normative cohort; only Novelty Seeking scores were not different. Harm Avoidance and Self-directedness scores were correlated with PDQ-39 total, HAMD, HAMA scores, and anxiolytic/antidepressant treatment. Novelty Seeking scores were correlated with impulsivity. Pearson correlations between TCI dimensions, principal component analysis of TCI sub-dimensions and Cronbach's alpha coefficients showed adequate psychometric proprieties. CONCLUSION: The TCI seems to be an adequate tool to evaluate personality dimensi... 📃Scientific paper: Role of serum cathelicidin in diagnosis of patient with prostatitis and prostate carcinoma Abstract: Background This study investigated the diagnostic role of 75 levels measured in serum prostatitis and prostate carcinoma and in the differentiation of these two conditions. Methods The study was conducted with 75 patients histopathologically diagnosed with prostate carcinoma or prostatitis and followed up at the Departments of Urology and Medical Oncology and 21 healthy male subjects. Serum cathelicidin levels were investigated using the ELISA method. Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS for Windows 22.0 package software. Compliance of the variables to normal distribution was examined using visual and analytic methods. In the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, cases with a p value of greater than 0.05 were accepted as normal distribution. Results A total of 75 patients including 45 diagnosed with prostate carcinoma and 30 diagnosed with prostatitis, as well as 21 healthy control subjects were included in the study. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) was detected as 23 (4–1200) ng/mL in the patients with prostate carcinoma and as 9.85 (3.9–405 ng/mL) in the patients with prostatitis. The cathelicidin levels were diagnostically significant when assessed by ROC analysis in the prostate cancer, prostatitis and control groups ( p  = 0.005). The cutoff values derived from the ROC curve analysis were 3.5151 ng/mL for distinguishing prostate cancer from prostatitis, 2.2620 ng/mL for prostate cancer versus control group and 1.2340 ng/mL for prostatitis versus control group... 📃Scientific paper: Using GANs for De Novo Protein Design Targeting Microglial IL-3R$\alpha$ to Inhibit Alzheimer's Progression Abstract: IL-3 is a hemopoietic growth factor that usually targets blood cell precursors; IL-3R is a cytokine receptor that binds to IL-3. However, IL-3 takes on a different role in the context of glial cells in the nervous system, where studies show that the protein IL-3 protects against Alzheimer's disease by activating microglia at their IL-3R receptors, causing the microglia to clear out the tangles caused by the build-up of misfolded Tau proteins. In this study, we seek to ascertain what role the secondary structure of IL-3 plays in its binding with the receptor. The motivation behind this study is to learn more about the mechanism and identify possible drugs that might be able to activate it, in hopes of inhibiting the spread of Alzheimer's Disease. From a preliminary analysis of complexes containing IL-3 and IL-3R, we hypothesized that the binding is largely due to the interactions of three alpha helix structures stretching towards the active site on the receptor. The original Il-3 protein serves as the control in this experiment; the other proteins being tested are generated through several types of computational de novo protein design, where machine learning allows for the production of entirely novel structures. The efficacy of the generated proteins is assessed through docking simulations with the IL-3R receptor, and the binding poses are also qualitatively examined to gain insight into the function of the binding. From the docking data and poses, the most successfu... Continued on ES/IODE ➡️ https://etcse.fr/b98 ------- If you find this interesting, feel free to follow, comment and share. 📃Scientific paper: Graves’ disease after exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine: a case report and review of the literature Abstract: Background Autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA) is characterized by immune system dysregulation after exposure to adjuvants, such as aluminum. Although cases of autoimmune thyroid diseases caused by ASIA have been reported, Graves' disease is one of the rarer diseases. There are some reports that vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) cause ASIA. Here, we describe a case of Graves’ disease following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and a review of the literature. Case presentation A 41-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of palpitations and fatigue. Two weeks after receiving the second SARS-CoV-2 vaccine (BNT162b2, Coronavirus Modified Uridine messenger RNA (mRNA) Vaccine, Pfizer), she developed fatigue and gradually worsened. On admission, she exhibited thyrotoxicosis (thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) < 0.01 mIU/L (0.08–0.54), free triiodothyronine (FT3) 33.2 pmol/L (3.8–6.3), and free thyroxine (FT4) 72.1 pmol/L (11.6–19.3)) and palpitations associated with atrial fibrillation. TSH receptor antibody (TRAb) was positive (TRAb 5.0 IU/L (< 2.0)), and ^99mTc scintigraphy showed diffuse uptake in the thyroid gland, suggesting that the thyrotoxicosis in this case was caused by Graves’ disease. Thiamazole was prescribed to correct her condition, and soon after this treatment was initiated, her symptoms and thyroid hormone levels were significantly reduced. Conclusions This case report reinforces the p... Continued on ES/IODE ➡️ https://etcse.fr/7in ------- If you find this interesting, feel free to follow, comment and share. 📃Scientific paper: Preliminary Design of Detector Assembly for DIXE Abstract: Diffuse X-ray Explorer (DIXE) is a proposed X-ray spectroscopic survey experiment for the China Space Station. Its detector assembly (DA) contains the transition edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeter and readout electronics based on the superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) on the cold stage. The cold stage is thermally connected to the ADR stage, and a Kevlar suspension is used to stabilize and isolate it from the 4 K environment. TES and SQUID are both sensitive to the magnetic field, so a hybrid shielding structure consisting of an outer Cryoperm shield and an inner niobium shield is used to attenuate the magnetic field. In addition, IR/optical/UV photons can produce shot noise and thus degrade the energy resolution of the TES microcalorimeter. A blocking filter assembly is designed to minimize the effects. In it, five filters are mounted at different temperature stages, reducing the probability of IR/optical/UV photons reaching the detector through multiple reflections between filters and absorption. This paper will describe the preliminary design of the detector assembly and its optimization. ;Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures. 📃Scientific paper: A New Nonlinear Autoregressive Exogenous (NARX)-based Intra-spinal Stimulation Approach to Decode Brain Electrical Activity for Restoration of Leg Movement in Spinally-injured Rabbits Abstract: INTRODUCTION: This study aimed at investigating the stimulation by intra-spinal signals decoded from electrocorticography (ECoG) assessments to restore the movements of the leg in an animal model of spinal cord injury (SCI). METHODS: The present work is comprised of three steps. First, ECoG signals and the associated leg joint changes (hip, knee, and ankle) in sedated healthy rabbits were recorded in different trials. Second, an appropriate set of intra-spinal electric stimuli was discovered to restore natural leg movements, using the three leg joint movements under a fuzzy-controlled strategy in spinally-injured rabbits under anesthesia. Third, a nonlinear autoregressive exogenous (NARX) neural network model was developed to produce appropriate intra-spinal stimulation developed from decoded ECoG information. The model was able to correlate the ECoG signal data to the intra-spinal stimulation data and finally, induced desired leg movements. In this study, leg movements were also developed from offline ECoG signals (deciphered from rabbits that were not injured) as well as online ECoG data (extracted from the same rabbit after SCI induction). RESULTS: Based on our data, the correlation coefficient was 0.74±0.15 and the normalized root means square error of the brain-spine interface was 0.22±0.10. CONCLUSION: Overall, we found that using NARX, appropriate information from ECoG recordings can be extracted and used for the generation of proper intra-spinal electric sti... 📃Scientific paper: The impact of HIV infection on clinical presentation and mortality among persons with hepatocellular carcinoma in Kampala, Uganda Abstract: BACKGROUND: HIV infection is associated with more rapid progression of some comorbidities. This study assessed the impact of HIV-infection on the presentation and outcome of HCC. METHODS: HCC patients attending the Mulago National Referral Hospital in Uganda were enrolled into a natural history study of HCC between March 2015 and February 2019. Standardized methods were used to collect clinical, ultrasound and laboratory data at enrolment. HCC cases were confirmed and enrolled based on a combination of clinical, ultrasound, tumor marker and pathology data. Follow-up contact was made at one, three, six, and twelve months post-enrolment to determine vital status. Symptoms and signs at diagnosis and subsequent survival were compared by HIV status. Kaplan Meier curves were used to assess HCC survival. RESULTS: Of 441 persons with HCC, 383 (87.0%) died within 12 months following HCC diagnosis. The median (IQR) survival was 42 (20, 106) days. HIV infection was present in 79 (18%) cases. After adjusting for baseline demographic and clinical characteristics, HIV infection was associated with increased mortality but only among those with severe HIV-associated immunosuppression (CD4 count < 200 cells per cubic milliliter), aHR (95% C) = 2.12 (1.23–3.53), p = 0.004, and not among PLWH with ≥ 200 CD4 cells per cubic milliliter, aHR (95% C) = 1.15 (0.82–1.60), p = 0.417. CONCLUSION: Among relatively young Ugandans, HCC is a devastating disease with rapid mortality that is es... 📃Scientific paper: Assessing the role of blood pressure in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a Mendelian randomization study Abstract: Background Observational studies have suggested a close but controversial relationship between blood pressure (BP) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It remains unclear whether this association is causal. The authors employed a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to evaluate the causal relationship between BP and ALS. Genetic proxies for systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), antihypertensive drugs (AHDs), ALS, and their corresponding genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary datasets were obtained from the most recent studies with the largest sample sizes. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was adopted as the main approach to examine the effect of BP on ALS and four other MR methods were used for sensitivity analyses. To exclude the interference between SBP and DBP, a multivariable MR approach was used. Results We found that genetically determined increased DBP was a protective factor for ALS (OR = 0.978, 95% CI 0.960–0.996, P  = 0.017) and that increased SBP was an independent risk factor for ALS (OR = 1.014, 95% CI 1.003–1.025, P  = 0.015), which is supported by sensitivity analyses. The use of calcium channel blocker (CCB) showed a causal relationship with ALS (OR = 0.985, 95% CI 0.971–1.000, P  = 0.049). No evidence was revealed that ALS caused changes in BP. Conclusions This study provides genetic support for a causal effect of BP and ALS that increased DBP has a protective effect on ALS, and... 📃Scientific paper: African Swine Fever and Its Control Measures in Wild Boar: A “De Iure Condito” Analysis in the European Union Abstract: SIMPLE SUMMARY: The arrival of the African swine fever (ASF) epizootic in the European continent has pushed public veterinary authorities to act immediately in order to contain its spread by applying the regulatory guidance of the current Animal Health Law of the European Union (Regulations EU 2016/429). Control and surveillance measures, in accordance with Regulations 2020/687 and 2023/594, have been implemented. Moreover, protection and surveillance areas have been created around the infected holdings and the wild boar cases. This paper analyzes the advantages and critical points of the legal framework for the control of ASF in wild boar, focusing on the role of official veterinary services in European Union Member States (EU MS). ABSTRACT: Recently, the African swine fever (ASF) epizootic has been reported in domestic pigs and wild boars in several European Union Member States (EU MS) and epidemiological evidence has accumulated which indicates that wild boar play a key role in maintaining and spreading the disease. Thanks to the experience gained when managing ASF outbreaks in Sardinia (Italy) and Eastern Europe, Directive 2002/60 CE was issued. This directive represented an important step forward in controlling the disease, particularly the risk of spreading the virus to wild animals. Since 2021, according to Regulation (EU) 2016/429, which is also called “Animal Health Law—AHL”, when the MS competent authority suspects or confirms ASF (a cat. A listed disease)...
