Impressive Growth Rates And Tremendous Economic Potential

Emerging in 1992 from a civil war that lasted 15 years, Mozambique has rapidly transformed from one of the world’s poorest countries to one with impressive economic growth, fueled by market reforms, extensive government spending on infrastructure, and considerable foreign investment. The country also benefits from a lengthy coastline, proximity to the South African market and vast natural wealth, including significant agricultural, mineral and hydrocarbon resources.

However, over half of the population of about 35 million still lives in poverty, with rural households particularly vulnerable to weather-related hazards. Despite the tremendous economic potential, the business environment remains challenging. Mozambique faces an unstable political and security situation, inconsistent fiscal policies, corruption, poor infrastructure, and the workforce lacks advanced skills. Furthermore, the economy remains under-diversified and dependent on global demand and fluctuations in prices for its commodities.
