Comprehensive datasets, including production, trade, and crop-specific use, are needed and initiatives like AfricaFertilizer aim to provide detailed and accurate data to better inform policy and private sector decisions. The evolution of fertilizer usage in Africa tells a compelling story. From 8.0 Kg/Ha in 2006 to a peak of 42.5 Kg/Ha in 2019, followed by a drop to 34.5 Kg/Ha in 2022 due to the fertilizer crisis, the journey has been challenging. Since 2009, IFDC and its partners have been tracking 18 fertilizer markets using various indicators, providing a comprehensive view for policymakers and the private sector through the AfricaFertilizer initiative to address gaps in fertilizer data on availability and market information in sub-Saharan Africa as part of the effort to increase fertilizer nutrient use to 50Kg/Ha. June #AfricaFertilizerWatch: #Rwanda relies heavily on #importedfertilizers to meet its annual fertilizer need of around 85,000 MT. To mitigate this dependency and reduce costs, the government of Rwanda, in a joint venture with #OCPAfrica, recently launched a state-of-the-art fertilizer #blending plant in #Bugesera to blend 100,000 MT of fertilizers annually. These past few months have been dynamic and fruitful for (West African Fertilizer Association (WAFA) Here is a look at the last five milestones: 🌱 1. Launch of Agricultural Training Program: On July 11, 2024, West African Fertilizer Association (WAFA) launched a critical program for West African agricultural students focused on sustainable soil health and fertilizer use. This initiative, in collaboration with the (International Fertilizer Association (IFA) began at the Federal University of Technology Akure with 148 students. 🌱 2. Opening of the Regional Soil Health and Fertilizer Center: On June 26, 2024, the Regional Soil Health and Fertilizer Center was inaugurated at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Ibadan, Nigeria. This center, a collaboration between #ECOWAS the (International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) the Africa Institute of Nutritional Sciences, UM6P - Mohammed VI Polytechnic University and OCP AFRICA, aims to improve soil health in West Africa. 🌱 3. Training of Master Trainers in Nutrient Management: In May 2024, West African Fertilizer Association (WAFA) in partnership with International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) the African Plant Nutrition Institute, the African Fertilizer and Agribusiness Partnership (AFAP) and the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) trained 30 master trainers in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. This training aimed to promote the efficient use of nutrients to increase agricultural yields. 🌱 4. Graduation Ceremony at UM6P - Mohammed VI Polytechnic University : In the same month, we celebrated the first cohort of graduates of the Fertilizer Industry Introductory Course at UM6P - Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Benguerir, Morocco. This collaboration between #WAFA and #UM6P, supported by OCP AFRICA, is a concrete example of our commitment to sustainable agriculture. 🌱 5. Participation in The Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit 2024: Also in May 2024, WAFA participated in #AFSH24 alongside International Fertilizer Association (IFA) organizing a side event on the role of businesses in implementing the Ten-Year Action Plan for the Development of the Fertilizer Sector. The discussions brought together leaders from #ETG, #OCP AFRICA, #Yara, #Indorama, #Omnia, #Meridian and more to discuss investments and partnerships to improve soil health and food security. We are committed to continuing these efforts to support sustainable agriculture and improve food security in West Africa. We promote concrete actions to meet the nutritional needs of crops and improve soil conditions in our region. 2️⃣ Supply Facilities: We collaborate with the main ports in West Africa – Abidjan, Lagos, Dakar, Lomé, Tema, Cotonou, Conakry, Port Harcourt, San Pedro, Calabar, Takoradi – to optimize fertilizer distribution. Our goal is to transform these ports into dynamic trade corridors, improving the efficiency and fluidity of supplies. 3️⃣ Financing: Financing is essential to support our mission. We are committed to: Understanding and overcoming the financial challenges faced by our members. Developing innovative and beneficial financing mechanisms for all stakeholders. Promoting easier access to finance for farmers and businesses. Influencing Member States’ subsidy financing strategies to ensure timely payments to suppliers. From our June #AfricaFertilizerWatch report, we bring you updates on #fertilizerprices in #Côted'Ivoire : A 50 kg bag of #Urea varies between $27 (CFA 16,000) and $35 (CFA 21,000), while #NPK 0-23-19 varies between $28 (CFA 16,500) and $33 (CFA 19,500). June #AfricaFertilizerWatch: #Tanzania’s principal port of #Dar es Salaam has a rated capacity of 6.0 million (MT) for #bulk #liquidcargo and 14.1 million (MT) for dry goods. June Africa Fertilizer Watch: According to South Africa’s national fertilizer statistics for June, urea imports for the period from January to April this year amounted to approximately 137,000 tonnes, exceeding last year's figures for the same period. In contrast, MAP imports have decreased, with only about 13,300 tonnes. Total imports during this period are significantly lower than the average for the same period over the past four years, and they are only comparable to last year's figures.
